ST. HENRY, Ohio — The Indians looked as if they might be headed for a rout.
They ended up winning, but it was no easy task.
Fort Recovery High School’s football team jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first eight minutes Friday night and held on for a 24-21 victory over the St. Henry Redskins.
St. Henry (1-7, 1-5 Midwest Athletic Conference), whose only win came by a 24-21 score over St. John’s on Sept. 13, outscored the Indians 14-3 in the second half, pulling to within three points on Andrew Lange’s 40-yard touchdown pass to Casey Bruening with 8:31 to play. But the scoring stopped there as FRHS escaped with the victory.
Fort Recovery (3-5, 2-4 MAC) wasted no time grabbing the lead Friday as Derek Jutte scored on a 9-yard run with just 56 seconds ticked off the clock. At the 4:40 mark of the first quarter, Gavin Thobe handled most of a 99-yard scoring drive with an 87-yard scoring run to put the Indians in control.

But the visiting team’s dominance ended there as the rest of the game was a back-and-forth battle. KJ Jacobs got St. Henry on the board with a 2-yard TD run early in the second quarter, and Thobe responded with a 34-yard scoring reception from FRHS quarterback Clay Schmitz 1:03 before halftime. The Redskins got in the end zone on their first drive of the third quarter on a 6-yard run by Owen Lefeld before Cobe Wendel connected on a 30-yard field goal to push the Fort Recovery lead back to 10. Those points proved to be the difference as St. Henry could not capitalize again after Bruening’s score.
Offensive numbers were fairly even on the night, with the Indians gaining 389 yards compared to 361 for the home team. Both turned the ball over twice.
Schmitz was efficient through the air, connecting on 15 of 19 pass attempts for 266 yards. Seven of those went to Thobe for 129 yards.
Thobe added another 92 yards on the ground on just four attempts.
Jacob Acheson led the Tribe defense with 16 tackles and an interception.
Jacobs ran 30 times for 142 yards for St. Henry and caught three passes for 31 yards. Andrew Lange was 11-of-22 passing for 207 yards.
Fort Recovery will host Division VI No. 6 Marion Local Friday before closing their season at Versailles on Nov. 1.
