COLUMBUS GROVE, Ohio — The Tribe girls are moving on.
Fort Recovery High School’s girls cross country team qualified for the regional by finishing third Saturday at the Division III Northwest District 2 meet.
The top three teams and top 12 individuals not on advancing teams advance to regional, which is Saturday at Tiffin.
Host Columbus Grove had three place in the top four and all five of the top 10 to score 24 points and win the championship. St. Henry was the runner-up with 52 points and Fort Recovery totaled 83 for third.
In the District 1 meet held at the same location, the FRHS boys had their season end as they took seventh with 152 points. Columbus Grove had the top four positions on its way to the title with 23 points. Waynesfield-Goshen (106) was a distant second, edging Bluffton by one point.
Hanna Metzger was the top FRHS girl as she finished 12th in 21 minutes, 24.3 seconds. Caitlin Weitzel (22:10.6) and Megan Diller (22:10.9) were back-to-back in 18th and 19th, respectively. Alyssa Henrichs ended in 22:13.3 for 21st, and Sarah Siefring completed the team total by placing 23rd in 22:15.9.
Columbus Grove’s Alyssa Ellerbrock won in 18:49.4.
Drew Muhlenkamp was the top Fort Recovery boy in 18th in 17:43.7. Jared Timmerman (19:07.6) finished 26th, one spot ahead of Connor Gower (19:12.3). Jayden McEldowney (20:17.5) placed 42nd, and Ethan Evers (20:47) placed 50th.
Carson Closson of Columbus Grove was the individual champion in 16:37.6
Jay drops finale
The Jay County junior varsity football team had a late push but fell short with a 7-6 loss to the Bellmont Braves on Saturday morning.
Kadin Ridenour, who had 70 rushing yards, scored a third-quarter touchdown to pull the Patriots (1-7) within one point, but they were not able to tie or take the lead on the conversion.
Bellmont, which finished with negative yards of total offense, scored its lone touchdown in the first quarter.
Zach Mayfield led the JCHS defense with 10 tackles and a pair of sacks, while Daidrick Retz and Ridenour had eight stops apiece.
