FORT RECOVERY — The nightmare began with a two-hour weather delay.
It continued with a 73-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.
The first two drives of the second half didn’t make things any better.
Fort Recovery High School’s football team had a punt blocked deep in its territory and threw an interception on the next possession, and both turned into Jacob Niemeyer touchdowns in a 41-20 loss to the Minster Wildcats in the Midwest Athletic Conference opener Friday.
Minster (3-0, 1-0 MAC), which scored a touchdown late in the second quarter for a 20-13 advantage at halftime, blocked a Fort Recovery punt on the opening drive of the third quarter and took over at the Indian 31.
Jacob Niemeyer later scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 7-yard run to make it 27-13. On the second play of the ensuing drive for Fort Recovery (1-2, 0-1 MAC), Alex Schmitmeyer picked off a Clay Schmitz pass.
Niemeyer needed just two plays to cover the 29 yards and find the end zone on a 5-yard carry as the Wildcats scored twice in the span of 93 seconds.
The Indians cut the deficit to 34-13 late in the third quarter as Schmitz, who was 7-of-13 through the air for 130 yards, connected with Regan Martin for a 46-yard TD.
But the Wildcats put the game out of reach with a Schmitmeyer touchdown run from the 7, his fourth score of the night.
Schmitmeyer carried the ball 33 times for 266 yards and four touchdowns, including a 73-yard rumble on the first play from scrimmage.
Niemeyer had 105 yards and two scores on 12 carries.
Derek Jutte led the Fort Recovery rushing attack with 128 yards on 18 carries, including a 29-yard score in the second quarter. Gavin Thobe had a 26-yard TD catch from Schmitz in the second period as the Indians were able to tie the score at 13-all.
Schmitmeyer tallied his third TD run, this one from 3 yards, with 22 seconds left before half.
Fort Recovery will look to even its season and conference record next week on the road at the New Bremen Cardinals (2-1, 0-1 MAC), who lost 45-0 to the Anna Rockets on Friday.
