A freshman finally won. The team did too.
Lydia Keihn beat the field as the Jay County High School girls cross country team grabbed the title in the invitational it hosted Saturday at Hudson Family Park.
The Patriots earned the top four spots in totaling 23 points to win the team championship. Hagerstown was the runner-up with 42 points, and Madison-Grant was third with 77 points as it edged Blue River Valley by a sixth-runner tiebreaker.
Jay County’s boys totaled 61 points for second place, with Hagerstown scoring 19 points for first. Elwood scored 84 for third.
Keihn, a freshman, crossed the finish line in 20 minutes, 52.7 seconds, for the first race win of her career. Junior Sophia Fugiett was runner-up in 22:00.8, and Raven Weaver finished third in 22:11.8. Lindy Wood had a time of 22:45.3 for fourth.
Lita Chowning was 13th in 26:08.1 to complete the Patriots’ team score.
Aaron Funkhouser (19:35.5) and Thomas LeMaster (19:36.2) were eighth and ninth, respectively, for the JCHS boys. Mitchell Winner (20:02.8) finished 13th, Ben Hunter (20:04.8) placed 14th and Zade Fosnaugh (20:59.4) was 17th.
Fort trounces Trojans
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s volleyball team swept the Arcanum Trojans on Saturday at Fort Site Fieldhouse, 25-13, 25-21, 25-23.
It was the fifth consecutive win for the Indians (12-1), who are ranked sixth in the OHSVCA Division IV poll.
Olivia Patch had a breakout performance offensively with 18 kills. Paige Fortkamp was second on the team with 11 kills, and Marissa Gaerke contributed eight kills.
Brooke Kahlig tallied 16 digs, and Whitley Rammel collected three blocks. Hope Wendel and Chloe Showalter registered 22 and 21 assists, respectively.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team also won, 25-7, 25-22. Grace Guggenbiller led six kills, and Lilie Leuthold had four kills. Madelyn Knapke added eight assists, and Emma Kahlig notched four aces.

NOBLESVILLE — A 2-2 effort in the Noblesville Invitational on Saturday earned the Jay County volleyball team a seventh-place finish on Saturday.
The Patriots (9-6) defeated Shelbyville (25-22, 25-16) and Union County (25-15, 25-18) and lost to Franklin Central (25-20, 25-13) and Plainfield Central (25-13, 25-13).
Natalie Miles posted team highs in kills (14), aces (five) and digs (32). Alana Kunkler was second with seven kills, and had a team-best 10 blocks.
Sara Hemmelgarn and Hallie Fields had six kills apiece, and the latter also had 15 digs.
Pacie Denney collected 33 assists.
