NEW BREMEN, Ohio — In each of the second and third quarters, the Indians were able to reach the end zone late to even the score.

They lost the ability to do the same in the fourth.

Mitchell Hays scored the go-ahead touchdown less than four minutes into the fourth quarter and the Fort Recovery High School football team didn’t have an answer for the third time in a 34-27 loss to the New Bremen Cardinals on Friday.

Fort Recovery (1-3, 0-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) had its ensuing drive after the Hays score go every which way, but mostly backward, as it was called for a holding penalty and had quarterback Clay Schmitz tackled 16 yards behind the line of scrimmage.

After New Bremen went three-and-out on its next possession, Fort Recovery took over at its own 40 with three minutes to go. The Tribe got as close as the 25 yard line of the Cardinals (3-1, 1-1 MAC) only to have New Bremen’s Zach Bertke pick off a Schmitz pass at the 16 in the final minute.

Schmitz finished 16-of-27 through the air for 271 yards, three touchdowns and that fateful interception.

The junior connected with Regan Martin for a 10-yard score on the Indians’ first possession, only to have Bertke and the Cardinals answer with a 1-yard touchdown.

Nolan Bornhorst scored a 2-yard touchdown to put the Cardinals on top 13-7 after one quarter of play. The Indians responded on a Schmitz-to-Martin connection of 19 yards pass and catch, but Hays notched the first of his two rushing scores, this one from 33 yards, to put the Cardinals on top 20-13 with 50 seconds remaining.

Fort Recovery punched back with a six-play drive, all pass plays, that covered 65 yards and took 48 seconds. The drive culminated with a Riley Pearson 33-yard touchdown as the score was locked at 20 at halftime.

Martin caught seven of Schmitz’s passes for 132 yards, and Pearson had three grabs for 73 yards.

Midway through the third quarter New Bremen nabbed a 27-20 lead on a Wyatt Dicke 19-yard score. The Tribe, which travels to Coldwater (4-0, 2-0 MAC) on Friday, found paydirt with 1:59 to play on a Gavin Thobe 8-yard scamper.

Hays finished the day with 23 carries for 127 yards to lead New Bremen.
