FORT RECOVERY — The Indians can still win a conference title.
They just may have to share it with a handful of other teams.
Fort Recovery High School’s volleyball team got tripped up against the Marion Local Flyers on Thursday in a 16-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-16 defeat.
The loss drops the Division IV No. 3 Indians to 15-2 on the year and 5-1 in Midwest Athletic Conference play.
There are now four teams — top-ranked St. Henry, No. 2 New Bremen, ninth-ranked Marion Local and Fort Recovery — tied for first in the MAC.
Paige Fortkamp registered 13 kills, two ahead of Paige Jutte. Whitley Rammel and Olivia Patch both ended with 10 kills. Fortkamp also notched four blocks and five digs.
Marissa Gaerke totaled seven kills and Brooke Kahlig had six kills to go with her team-best 19 digs. Hope Wendel contributed 16 assists.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team outlasted Marion Local, 21-25, 25-17, 25-19.
Lilie Leuthold led the team with seven kills, as Emma Kahlig and Grace Guggenbiller finished with six kills each.
Jay beats Warriors
An all-around balanced attack propelled the Jay County volleyball team to a four-set win on Thursday against the Wes-Del Warriors.
The Patriots moved to 12-5 on the year with a 25-22, 26-24, 25-21, 25-15 victory.
Alana Kunkler led Jay County with a dozen kills, one more than Natalie Miles. Hallie Fields was third with 10 kills. Kunkler also had six blocks and five aces, Miles chipped in 25 digs and a pair of blocks and Fields recorded 12 digs and three blocks.
Madison Dirksen had six digs, five kills, four blocks and four aces. Sara Hemmelgarn contributed 14 kills, seven kills and five blocks to the winning effort.
Pacie Denney set up the Patriots’ offense to the tune of 41 assists.
Jay County’s junior varsity team lost, 25-21, 25-13. Abbie Fields, Lilly Hedges and Madison Brunswick finished with three kills each.
FR season ends
HARROD, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s boys golf team had its season end on Thursday as it finished seventh in the sectional tournament at Colonia Golfers Club.
Minster won the team championship with 318. Delphos St. John’s (332) and Lima Central Catholic (344) was third. The Indians had 389 for seventh out of 12 teams.
The top three teams and top three individuals not on advancing teams qualify for the district tournament.
Grant Knapke shot 89 in the final tournament of his career to lead Fort Recovery. He was 23rd overall. Cole Muhlenkamp joined him in the sub-100 club with his 99. Carson Rammel (100) and Zander Kunkler (101) completed the team score.
Minster’s Grant Koenig was the match medalist with his round of 76.
Lincolnview’s Evan Miller (84), Temple Christian’s Lincoln Waters (84) and St. Henry’s Reed Koesters (85) earned the three district qualifying spots.
Jay boys shut out
ST. MARYS, Ohio — Jay County’s boys soccer team wasn’t able to muster any offense in a 7-0 loss to the host Memorial Roughriders on Thursday.
It was the third loss in four games for Jay County (7-5).
Memorial (4-2-4) scored three times in the first half and poured on four more in the final 40 minutes.
Jay County’s junior varsity team also lost, 5-2. Kaleb Meadows and Houston Yowell both scored for the Patriots.
EJ runners second
PARKER CITY — East Jay Middle School’s boys and girls cross country teams finished second in a four-team meet on Thursday at Monroe Central.
Monroe Central swept the titles, with the girls earning 26 points to win. East Jay was runner-up with 29 points. Monroe Central’s boys scored 30 points, 12 ahead of East Jay.
Ayla Grabner was the top EJMS runner, finishing second in 13 minutes, 6 seconds. Alexis Sibray placed third, Natalie Carreno took seventh, Paityn Wendel ended ninth and Aubrey Millspaugh was 10th.
Cameron Clark was finished second in 12:02 to lead the Chief boys. Creed Beiswanger and Gabe Pinkerton were sixth and seventh respectively. Carson Davis and Timo Minnich were back-to-back in 13th and 14th.
Chiefs sweep Indians
The East Jay seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both swept the Union City Indians on Thursday.
The eighth graders moved to 9-4 with a 25-11, 25-10 victory, while the seventh graders improved to 5-8 with a 25-16, 25-21 triumph.
Maggie Dillon led the eighth graders with five kills. Brenna Haines had a team-high 13 points and 10 aces, and Sophie Saxman had eight points, six aces and four kills.
Cassie Petro led the EJMS seventh graders with three kills and a pair of blocks. Jasmine Esparza recorded five aces and Meredith Dirksen added five assists.
