ALEXANDRIA — A pair of juniors paired for a doubles win.
A sophomore and a freshman teamed to get another.
The singles players weren’t able to steal one from the host Tigers.
Jay County High School’s boys tennis team opened its season Tuesday with a 3-2 loss to the Alexandria-Monroe Tigers.
Darius Esparza and Gavin Myers, both juniors, downed Benjamin Devault and Jesse Lipps by a 6-1, 6-4 margin in their No. 1 doubles tilt, while Austin Dirksen (sophomore) and Sam Myers (freshman) won their No. 2 doubles match against Aaron Mathews and Tanner Norris 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
At No. 1 singles, Jay County junior Crosby Heniser lost to Derek Stinefield 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Simon Dirksen fell at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-3, and Abraham Dirksen dropped his varsity debut 6-3, 6-5.
Jay County’s junior varsity team won, 4-1. Lucas Lyons and Seth Degler won their respective singles matches. Allen Dues and Logan McGinnis teamed for a doubles win, as did Gage Sims and Presley Kunkle.
Tribe takes second
VAN WERT, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s boys golf team came in second place during a four-team match Tuesday at Hickory Sticks Golf Club.
Host Lincolnview shot 176 for first place, edging the Indians by four strokes. Antwerp shot 189 for third and Crestivew was fourth with 212.
Derek Lochtefeld and Carson Rammel both had matching scores of 41 to lead the Indians (1-2).
Their efforts shared the match medalist honors.
Isaac LeFevre’s 48 was third for the Indians, and Zander Kunkler shot 50.
Carson Siefring (54) and Cole Muhlenkamp (55) did not factor into the team total.
Inman ends perfect
Inman U-Loc finished off a perfect season Monday by defeating Lions Club 4-3 to win the Portland Junior League Willie Mays division championship.
Joe Geesaman, who was later named league’s Mr. Baseball, struck out eight Lions batters in three scoreless innings for Inman. Bryce Weigand finished with two singles, while Gavin Byrum and Chase Bragg both singled. Cody Jacobs hit an RBI double for what would eventually become the game-winning run. Brady Millspaugh got the save by striking out all three batters in the sixth inning.
