PARKER CITY — Once Brian Bihn got going, so too did the Indians.

Although they had a comfortable lead, a bit of a third quarter struggle let the advantage shrink a bit.

Still, the Tribe had done enough before halftime to come away with its first win of the season.

Bihn scored 11 of his 17 points in the second quarter and helped carry the Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team to a 65-45 victory over the host Monroe Central Golden Bears on Friday for their first notch in the win column.

“It was hard-fought,” said FRHS coach Jim Melton, whose team opens Midwest Athletic Conference play Friday at Delphos St. John’s. “The Bears didn’t give up by any stretch. They kept clawing their way back into it ...

“We had opportunities (to put it away). I remember at one point in the first half I looked up and I believe it was 34-19. We had a chance … a couple possessions there … and then they clawed right back into it.”

Bihn, who stands 6-feet, 6-inches tall and is near 300 pounds, is 3 inches taller and probably 80 pounds heavier than any player on the Monroe Central roster. While he didn’t do much in the first quarter — the Indians led 14-13 after eight minutes of play — once the big man got going in the second the Bears couldn’t keep up with him.

As Fort Recovery (1-1) already led 16-15, Bihn made the first of his five baskets to continue a stretch during which the Indians went on a 13-5 run to start the second quarter. Six of those points were from Bihn, who powered his way to the block each time.

“We talk about pounding it inside, inside out, trying to get him the ball,” Melton said. “Obviously he’s a really nice player. Good shooter. Nice touch. Smart. And I know a lot of what we like to do goes through Brian. So we just look to him a little bit to get him going.”

The 34-19 lead late in the second quarter was 35-23 at halftime.

Fort Recovery, which only had six turnovers in the first half, matched that in the third quarter which allowed the Golden Bears to pull within single digits.

Trailing 42-28, Monroe Central went on a 9-3 run to trim the deficit to eight.

Cole Munchel converted a Jackson Ullom assist to start the run, and after Regan Martin of FRHS drove the left baseline for two points, Ullom split a pair of free throws then hit a jumper from the free-throw line. Josiah Ullom also had a pair of free throws. Jackson Ullom, who led the Golden Bears with 17 points himself, scored on a spinning jumper from the right block to make it 45-37.

“Yeah we got sloppy there in the third quarter until we started valuing the basketball and being strong with it,” Melton said. “These are all fundamental issues that we can correct and you know what, we’ll go back to the lab tomorrow and go to work.”

Cale Rammel, who also finished with 17 points, hit a 3-pointer from the left quarter just before the third-quarter buzzer that put the Indians’ lead back in double figures for good. A stretch of eight points late in the fourth quarter pushed Fort Recovery’s advantage to 22 with 1:25 to play.

Seven of the eight Indians who saw the floor scored at least three points to help the squad overcome some foul trouble. Derek Jutte (five points) had two fouls in the first quarter, and Rammel also sat the bench a bit with two fouls before halftime.

“Our size was definitely an advantage and we’ve got to find a way to quit reaching and moving our feet and staying out of foul trouble,” Melton said. Fort Recovery was whistled for 18 of the game’s 38 fouls. “This is two games in a row we were having guys foul out or were in foul trouble. We’re not the deepest team right now either so we’ve got to get better at that.”

Caleb Rammel’s basket with 90 seconds remaining in overtime propelled Fort Recovery to a 42-38 victory.

The Indians (1-1) and Golden Bears went back-and-forth for most of the game, and the home squad was able to tie the score late in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. Rammel’s basket broke the 38-38 tie that began the extra period. Landon Post and Caleb Evers both made a free throw in the final minute for some insurance points.

The Indians led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter but trailed 19-18 at halftime. A 13-10 edge in the third put the Tribe on top, 31-29, heading into the fourth.

Post led all players with 21 points, while Evers finished with 13 points. Troy Homan and Reece Guggenbiller scored five and three points respectively.
