MUNCIE — The Patriots struggled to shake their sectional rival.
But they were able to come out on top.
Jay County High School’s girls basketball team got the host Delta Eagles’ best effort Thursday night but were able to eke out a 55-51 victory.
The Patriots (12-8) had a one-point lead after the first period and were up 27-23 at halftime. But they couldn’t pull away, as the Eagles (3-14) closed to within two eight minutes to play before JCHS held on for the one-point win.
Freshman Renna Schwieterman tallied 17 points to lead the Patriots, who will play their final home game of the season Saturday against Southern Wells. Izzy Rodgers and Madison Dirksen followed with 12 points apiece, and Hallie Fields added nine points.
Jay County won the junior varsity game 39-27 behind 17 points from Gabi Bilbrey and 11 from Abbie Fields.
Chief girls win
Sophie Saxman had a big scoring night Thursday to lead the East Jay Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team to a 49-34 victory over visiting South Adams.
The seventh grade team also won, 27-16.
Saxman racked up 24 points in powering the eighth grade Chiefs. Molly Muhlenkamp added seven points, and Bella Denton and Bralee VanSkyock each had six points.
Natalie Carreno led a pair of EJMS seventh graders in double figures with 11 points. Layliana ElDeeb scored 10 points.
Eagles roll
MONROEVILLE — The West Jay Middle School boys basketball teams posted matching victories Thursday, with the seventh and eighth graders each defeating the host Heritage Patriots 45-25.
Parker Nichols scored 17 points to lead the Eagle eighth graders. Jackson Edwards followed with 11 points, and Liam Garringer scored nine points.
Keegan Wasson finished with 13 points to pace the seventh grade team in its victory. Eli Goodspeed had nine points, and Ben Crouch and Trentin Street added eight apiece.
EJ loses to Stars
BERNE — East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade boys basketball team fell to host South Adams 28-18 Thursday. The seventh graders fell 36-27.
Zac McAbee led the eighth grade Chiefs with seven points. Justin DeHoff added four points.
Kadon Craig had 14 points for the East Jay seventh graders. Brenden Runyon followed with six points.
But they were able to come out on top.
