A little good fortune helped them erase the deficit.
Jay County High School’s boys steam team took second and third in the 400-yard freestyle relay while the Bruins were called for a disqualification. The result was a slim 126-124 win over Blackford for JCHS, which also topped Muncie Burris 136-101 in the double dual.
The Patriot girls cruised to victories of 163-93 over Burris and 170-89 over Blackford.
Senior Griffin Mann led the Patriots on Senior Night with wins in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. Chase McFarland, also a senior, was first in the 500 freestyle, and Justice Murphy won diving.
Erica Hathaway (50 freestyle, 100 butterfly) Ashlyn Dow (200 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Eliza Bader (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke) paced the JCHS girls with two wins apiece. Lilli Clemmons was first in the 500 freestyle, and Mara Bader took the 100 freestyle.

RICHMOND — Jay County High School’s girls basketball team woke up from a first-quarter funk to control the rest of the game in a 42-29 victory over the Richmond Red Devils.
The Patriots (14-8) managed just three points in the first quarter of their regular-season finale, but outscored Richmond 39-19 the rest of the way. That included a 12-3 advantage in the second quarter that gave them a two-point lead at halftime.
Freshman Renna Schwieterman and sophomore Madison Dirksen each finished with a double-double. Schwieterman racked up 15 points and 15 rebounds while Dirksen finished with 11 points and 12 boards.
Izzy Rodgers added seven points.
The junior varsity team won 33-12 behind 13 points from Gabi Bilbrey.
Indians fall
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team suffered its fourth loss of the season Tuesday, falling 56-43 to Franklin Monroe.
The Indians (12-4), who finished 13th in the Division IV poll released Tuesday, saw their three-game winning streak halted. Brooke Kahlig’s 13 points led the way in the loss to the Jets (15-2), and Val Muhlenkamp added nine.
FRHS earned 13 poll points, nine fewer than 10th-ranked Cornerstone Christian. Undefeated Fort Loramie is the top-ranked team in Division IV, followed by Toledo Christian and Portsmouth.
The Indians will face another difficult test Thursday when they visit Midwest Athletic Conference rival Marion Local (16-2), which is ranked fourth in Division IV.
Hill wins floor
KOKOMO — Jay County High School senior Halle Hill won the floor exercise title Saturday at the Northwestern Invitational.
Hill posted a 9.25 on the floor to lead the field of 45 gymnasts from nine schools. She was also sixth on both the balance beam and uneven parallel bars with scores of 7.95 and 7.9, respectively.
She added an 8.9 on the vault for an all-around total of 34, which was also good for sixth place.
The Patriots did not have enough gymnasts to post a full team score.
