MARIA STEIN, Ohio — The Indians didn’t just beat the fourth-ranked team in the state.
They did it emphatically.
Fort Recovery High School’s girls basketball team, which finished 13th in this week’s Division IV poll voting, had a double-digit lead at halftime Thursday and never relented in a 58-39 victory over the host No. 4 Marion Local Flyers.
The win lifted the Indians into a tie with Marion Local atop the Midwest Athletic Conference, with both teams sitting at 6-1.
Fort Recovery (13-4) took control early, leading by nine at the end of the first quarter. It extended the advantage to 27-14 at the half and was never seriously challenged.
Alli Vaughn’s 16 points led a group of three Indians in double figures. Olivia Patch added 13 points, and Brooke Kahlig finished with 11 points.
Heidi Rethman led Marion Local with 16 points.
Hill wins all-around
HUNTINGTON — Jay County High School’s Halle Hill was first in the all-around Thursday as the Patriot gymnastics team fell 95-2.80.875 to the Huntington North Vikings.
Hill picked up victories with scores of 8.95 on the floor exercise, 8.85 on the vault and 8.25 on the uneven parallel bars. She posted an 8.25 on the balance beam for second place, giving her an all-around score of 34.3.
Junior Kenzie Ring followed Hill with second-place finishes on both the floor (8.85) and bars (8.1). She added a score of 8.35 on the vault for sixth place.
First-year gymnasts Cassidy Upp and Misaal Fatimah posted career-best scores on the vault and floor, respectively.
WJMS drops two
DUNKIRK — The West Jay Middle School sixth grade basketball teams each suffered losses on their home floor Thursday. The A team fell 47-28 to Muncie Northside while the B team lost 19-9.
Malachi Hernandez scored 13 points to pace the A team, which dipped to 3-2. Carter Fugiett added a dozen points.
Camden Fraley had five points for the B team (0-3).
