FORT WAYNE — The Rockets continue to slide in the wrong direction.
The Portland Rockets suffered a pair of losses Saturday at the hands of the Fort Wayne Jackers as they closed the regular season with a 9-10 record.
Portland lost the first game 11-0 in four innings, and dropped game two 10-2.
After once boasting a 7-2 record with six consecutive wins, Portland has gone 2-8 since with a pair of three-game losing streaks.
Playing at Carrington Field, Fort Wayne jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and extended the advantage to 8-0 after two innings. The Jackers, who defeated Portland 13-2 Thursday, scored one more run in the third inning and a two in the fourth for the lopsided win.
Portland managed just three hits in the first game. Corbin Maddox and Kasey Henderson hit back-to-back two-out singles in the fourth inning but they were left stranded. Peyton Hurd singled in the fifth.
Cameron Gwin made his first start of the season for Portland, and he allowed eight runs on nine hits in two innings. He struck out one and walked two.
Fort Wayne led 3-0 in game two before Portland ended the stretch of 14 straight Jacker runs on the day. Caleb Mealy led off the fourth inning with a single, and Bryce Deckman followed with a walk. Mealy scored on a fielder’s choice from Justin Greene, and Zach Tanner hit an RBI double as Portland trailed 3-2.
But the Jackers came right back to score seven consecutive runs, including four in the fifth inning and two in the sixth, to take three straight games from the Rockets.
While the regular season is over for Portland, it still has one final home game. The Rockets host the first pool play game of the Red Carrington League tournament at 7 p.m. tonight against the Summit City Sluggers at Runkle-Miller Field.
The second game of pool play will be against the Fort Wayne Blues at 8 p.m. Friday at Carrington Field. The top two teams in each of the two, three-team pools will advance to a single-elimination tournament which will be at Carrington Field.
The semifinal games are 1 and 4 p.m. Saturday, with the championship slated for 1 p.m. Sunday.
