COLUMBUS, Ohio — For just the second time in its history, the girls basketball state tournament will be played away from Ohio State.
The OHSAA announced Tuesday the University of Dayton Arena will host the girls basketball tournament for the next three seasons.
“We are very excited to sign a three-year agreement for our member schools to experience UD Arena,” OHSAA executive director Jerry Snodgrass said in a release. “Southwest Ohio loves and supports basketball and the people at the University of Dayton have made it clear that they really want this state tournament on their campus. We believe that we have found a great home for the girls basketball state tournament.
In its 45 years, the OHSAA girls basketball state tournament has been played at Ohio State University all but one season. In 1986, it was at University of Akron.
Citing a limited number of available dates to use either Jerome Schottenstein Center or St. John Arena at Ohio State, the OHSAA found a new home for its tournament.
“We’re very proud that the OHSAA has entrusted us to host the girls basketball state tournament at The University of Dayton Arena for the next three years,” said Scott DeBolt, senior associate athletics director at the University of Dayton and executive director of UD Arena “The same ingredients that make UD arena the ideal place for the NCAA First Four — community support and excitement for the game of basketball, our facilities, staff and tournament hosting experience — will help create lifelong memories for the young women who come to Dayton to play in the state tournament and their school communities.”
Home to the Dayton Flyers men’s and women’s basketball teams, UD Arena was renovated in 2019, and has a seating capacity of 13,000. It has hosted OHSAA basketball tournament games along with Atlantic 10 Conference and NCAA tournament games. Having hosted 125 NCAA basketball tournament games, UD Arena has been the home court for March Madness more than any other facility in the country.
Fort Recovery won back-to-back state championships in 1990 and 1991 when the tournament was played at Ohio State. The Indians’ most recent trip to Columbus for the state tournament was in 2011.
The 2021 girls basketball state tournament is scheduled for March 11 through 13. The boys state tournament is March 18 through 20 at St. John Arena.
