Three former TinCaps were on the move Monday in a blockbuster trade ahead of Major League Baseball’s trade deadline.

In acquiring right-handed pitcher Mike Clevinger from the Cleveland Indians on Monday, the San Diego Padres traded six players, including three of the organization’s top 11 prospects, all of whom spent time with the Fort Wayne TinCaps in recent seasons.

The Fort Wayne TinCaps, who had their season canceled June 30, are the Class A affiliate of the Padres.

In the deal with Cleveland, the Padres (21-15) acquired front-line starter Clevinger, outfielder Greg Allen and a player to be named later. The Indians received shortstop Gabriel Arias, the Padres’ No. 7 prospect, left-handed pitcher Joey Cantillo (No. 9), infielder Owen Miller (No. 11), catcher Austin Hedges, first baseman/outfielder Josh Naylor and right-handed pitcher Cal Quantrill.

Arias, Cantillo and Miller each spent time with the Fort Wayne TinCaps recently, while Hedges, Naylor and Quantrill have MLB service time under their belt.

Cantillo shined for the TinCaps during the 2019 season. The 20-year-old Hawaiian made 19 starts with a 9-3 record in 98 innings. He had a 1.93 earned run average, struck out 128 to just 27 walks and boasted an 0.967 WHIP (walks/hits per innings pitched).

Before being called up to High A Lake Elsinore Storm on Aug. 8, 2019, Cantillo ranked first in the Midwest League in ERA, strikeouts, WHIP, batting average against (.173), strikeouts per nine innings (11.76), strikeout percentage (34.7) and strikeout-to-walk percentage (27.4). He was also second in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.74), swinging strike percentage (15.7) and home runs per nine innings (0.28) while his walks per nine innings (2.48) was third in the MWL.

In three starts for the Lake Elisnore Storm, he was 1-1 in 13 2/3 innings with a 4.61 ERA, 16 strikeouts and seven walks.

Cantillo, a 16th-round pick in the 2017 MLB draft, received an invitation to the Padres’ 60-man player pool ahead of the coronavirus-shortened season and was part of the team’s taxi squad.

Arias signed in 2016 out of Venezuela, and he spent a total of 140 games as a member of the TinCaps in the 2017 and ’18 seasons. He batted .240 with 27 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 55 RBIs during the 2018 season.

Miller played 26 games for the TinCaps in 2018. He batted .336 with 11 doubles, two homers and 13 RBIs.
