COLDWATER, Ohio — For a brief moment, the Indians had a first-quarter lead over the Cavs.
After falling behind, a big play later in the quarter helped the Tribe even the score at 14-apiece.
The Coldwater Cavaliers then scored 31 straight points, including 21 in the second quarter, to hand the Fort Recovery High School football team a 51-37 loss on Friday at Cavalier Stadium.
Fort Recovery’s Derek Jutte scored a 61-yard touchdown and Cobe Wendel kicked the extra point as the Indians (1-2, 1-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) evened the score with the Cavaliers (3-0, 3-0 MAC) at 14-14 with 3:22 to go in the first quarter.
Myles Blasingame connected with Tyler Schwieterman for a 57-yard touchdown for Coldwater just 2:25 later. A 32-yard field goal in the second quarter made it 24-14 with 7:38 before half, and Tanner Muhlenkamp intercepted a Clay Schmitz pass for a pick-6 and the Cavs were head 31-14 midway through the second quarter.
The Indians went three-and-out before Blasingame orchestrated a 12-play scoring drive, capped by a 17-yard pass to Schwieterman for the TD.
Blasingame was 9-of-15 through the air for 144 yards and three touchdowns. Schwieterman caught just two of Blasingame’s passes, but both resulted in six points while covering 74 yards. Jay Muhlenkamp had 37 yards on four receptions and a TD.
Blasingame also ran 19 times for 125 yards and a touchdown.
Leading 38-14 at half, Coldwater extended the lead with a 16-yard touchdown run from Zach McKibben.
Fort Recovery responded with a 2-yard TD pass from Schmitz to Gavin Thobe to make it 45-22 with less than four minutes to play in the third quarter. Coldwater went on top 51-22 on McKibben’s second touchdown run of the night.
McKibben totaled 69 yards on seven carries.
With the running clock in effect, Fort Recovery scored twice in the fourth quarter but it simply ran out of time. Jutte, who led the Indians with 117 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, reached the end zone on a 2-yard rush to make it 51-30. Schmitz, who completed half of his 26 pass attempts for 217 yards, threw a 34-yard strike to Wendel for the score with 5:28 to go in the game.
Fort Recovery, which hosts defending Division VII?state champion Anna Rockets (1-2, 1-2 MAC) got the ball back with 3:32 to play but wasn’t able to score again.
