PARKER CITY — The Patriot girls had two in the top 10 Saturday.
Both squads ended up third.
Lydia Keihn and Lindy Wood both placed seventh or better Saturday as the Jay County High School girls cross country team finished third in the Monroe Central Invitational.
Yorktown won the girls race with 42 points, edging the host Golden Bears by six points. Jay County scored 66 points for third.
Monroe Central’s boys won the title with 24 points, and Yorktown was runner-up with 32 points. Jay County totaled 91 points.
Keihn, a sophomore, had a time of 21 minutes, 23.1 seconds, for second overall, and Wood was seventh in 22:12.
Sophia Fugiett made her season debut and was 12th in 22:47. Lita Chowning placed 24th and Makaylah Brainerd was 28th in 28:23.2.
Mitchell Winner (19:33.7) and Aaron Funkhouser (19:35.1) were 13th and 14th, respectively, to lead the JCHS boys. Seth Wilson finished 19th in 20:04.3, Dustin Harris was 28th in 20:35.3 and Isaac Kunkler completed the Patriots’ team total by finishing 30th in 20:57.6.
Also running for the JCHS boys were Logan Zimmerman (31st), Carson Davis (37th), Sebastian Solis (42nd), Timo Minnich (43rd) and Kyle Theurer (45th).
Volleyball ends 1-3
NOBLESVILLE — Jay County’s volleyball team ended its losing streak Saturday morning but had another one start as it was 1-3 and finished in sixth place at the Noblesville Invitational.
The Patriots (3-8) beat the Huntington NorthVikings (25-19, 28-26) to snap a four match losing streak. They then fell to the host Millers (25-24, 28-26), Western Panthers (25-20, 25-19) and Franklin Central Flashes (25-19, 27-25, 15-8).
Alana Kunkler led Jay County with 30 kills and 14 total blocks on the day. Madison Dirksen was second with 24 kills and 13 blocks, while Natalie Miles chipped in eight kills. Brenna Haines posted a team-best 39 digs, and Grace Brewster notched 27 digs. Kunkler and Haines both led the squad with five aces.
Pacie Denney tallied 35 assists, and Izzy Rodgers had 27 service points and 26 assists.
Patriots lose to Jets
The Jay County junior varsity football team fell to the Adams Central Jets on Monday, 44-6.
The Patriots (1-3) allowed 22 points in the first quarter, and were down 36-0 when they finally reached the end zone.
Parker Nichols, who completed two of his seven passes for 52 yards, threw an 11-yard touchdown to Owen Ransom. His other completion went to Trey Nichols for 41 yards.
Sean Carpenter totaled 32 yards on seven carries, and Tavin Wasson led the defense with five tackles, including one in the backfield for a loss.
Youngsters get wins
WOODBURN and UNION CITY — Jay County Junior High’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both picked up a pair of wins recently.
The seventh graders, who are now 7-0 on the season, beat Woodlan 25-24, 25-16 Saturday in Woodburn, before topping Union City on the road Monday, 25-16, 25-18.
The Patriot eighth graders (6-1) beat Woodlan 25-22, 13-25, 15-13, and knocked off Union City 15-25, 25-23, 15-7.
Mya Kunkler led the Jay County seventh graders with seven kills, and Kayla Jetmore added nine aces. Kendel Rowles paced the defense with two blocks.
Jaelynn Lykins had seven kills to lead the eighth graders. Jozey Shimp tallied six aces, and Heaven Willoughby contributed six digs.
