Schwieterman powers Patriots

SELMA — Renna Schwieterman already had one multi-homer game in her career.

She did it again Monday.

Schwieterman hit two home runs, including what turned out to be the game winner, as the Jay County High School softball team rallied for an 8-7 victory against the host Wapahani Raiders.

Jay County (6-3), which trailed 4-1 after the third inning, struck for four runs in the fifth. Schwieterman blasted a three-run homer and her sister Aubrie Schwieterman came around to score as well to put the Patriots on top, 5-4.

Wapahani answered with two runs in the home half of the frame. In the sixth, Riah Champ scored on an error before Renna Schwieterman’s second home run, this one a two-run shot, put the Patriots on top for good.

Renna Schwieterman, who now has a team-high five home runs, collected five RBIs, with Rieley Brewster contributing one hit and an RBI. Aubrie Schwieterman and Maddy Fraley both had a pair of singles, and Olivia Bright hit a double.

Haleigh Clayton got the win, allowing seven runs — four earned — on eight hits. She struck out four and walked two.



Slide continues

BERNE — Fort Recovery’s softball team continued its slide Monday with a 7-4 loss to the South Adams Starfires.

It was the fifth straight loss for the Indians (11-8) and sixth in the last seven games.

Fort Recovery fell behind 4-1 in the first inning in part thanks to a Mallory Hirschy two-run home run.

The Starfires tacked on two more runs in the third inning and were on top 7-1 before Sophie Pearson drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. 

Jackie Homan hit a two-run double with two outs in the seventh inning but the Indians were unable to complete the rally.

Homan also had two singles to lead the Indians with three hits. Kensey Gaerke collected two singles, while Chloey Grisez and Brenna Homan both had singles.

Jackie Homan was charged with the loss, surrendering five earned runs on five hits. She struck out two in 3 1/3 innings.

The Indians will aim to end their losing skid as they hit the road to take on Midwest Athletic Conference rival Coldwater at 5 p.m. tonight.



Early hole too much

MUNCIE — Jay County’s junior varsity baseball team trailed 15-7 after the second inning and wasn’t able to catch up in a 23-13, five-inning loss to the host Delta Eagles on Monday.

Ryne Goldsworthy led the Patriots (2-4) offensively by going 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double and three RBIs. Bennett Weitzel also hit a homer and knocked in three runs.

Christian Runkle, Bryce Wenk and Tavin Wasson all collected three hits, while Cody Rowles and Conner Specht each had one hit.

Rowles suffered the loss, allowing 10 runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings.



Second sinks Jay

MIDDLETOWN — An eight-run second inning doomed the Jay County junior varsity baseball team in a 12-2 loss in five innings to the host Shenandoah Raiders on Friday.

The Patriots (2-3) were ahead 2-0 after the first inning before surrendering the eight-spot in the second.

Shenandoah added three runs in the third and one more in the fifth for the run-rule victory.

Bryce Wenk had a single and an RBI to lead the Patriots. Christian Runkle also had a single.

Wenk suffered the loss pitching, allowing 11 runs — just two earned — on three hits.

He walked four and struck out five in 2 2/3 innings of work.
