Wrestlers win Franklin invite
DAYTON, Ohio — It took eight trips, but the Patriots are champions.
Tony Wood and Bryce Wenk had individual titles in helping the Jay County High School wrestling team take first in the Franklin Invitational on Saturday.
It’s the first time the Patriots have won the tournament in eight tries.
Jay County scored 264 points for the championship. Reading (238) was second and Ross (217) was third out of nine scoring teams.
Wood, a 126-pounder, and Wenk (190) claimed the top spot in their weight classes.
Finishing in second place were Cody Rowles (113), Ethan Reiley (120) and Ramon Bravo (215).
Third-placers were Taye Curtis (120), Daidrick Retz (144), Cameron Gage (150), Landon Blowers (165), A.J. Myers (175) and Conner Specht (285).
Nate Paxson (157) finished fourth, Tristin Stout (190) and Max LeMaster (285) were both fifth and Kaleb Meadows (132) took sixth.
Three undefeated
MACONAQUAH — Three wrestlers went undefeated as the Jay County girls wrestling team competed in the Maconaquah Invitational on Saturday.
Lizzie Dollar, Willow Hardy and Mallory Winner were all 3-0 for the Patriots.
Jayla Huelskamp, Lilly Lothridge and Mollie Hines were each 2-1, while Tricia Ison and Mattie Affolder both finished 1-2.
Team scores were not kept.
Jay takes fourth
ROCHESTER — Jay County’s elementary wrestling team finished fourth Sunday in the Jordan Schafer Memorial Duals.
The Patriots were 2-1 in pool play with wins against Chesterton (54-22) and Fairfield (44-39) but lost to Penn (52-38). In the third-place match, Jay County fell to Mishawaka 40-36.
Khoden Bentz and Jackson Bonifas were each 4-0 on the day. Blake Wood, Brenna Ruble and Freddie Lingo all went 3-1, while Bryce VanSkyock, Maddox Byrum, Memphis Toor, Latham Hamilton and Varen Ridgway all finished 2-2.
