MADISON — The Patriots couldn’t keep hold of the ball in the second quarter.
They were unable to keep up with the Titans’ perimeter shooting.
Jay County High School’s boys basketball team got outscored 22-7 in the second quarter and fell short of the tournament championship as it lost to the Arsenal Tech Titans 59-31Thursday night in the final of the Jefferson County Invitational Tournament at Madison Consolidated.
“It was a game we were going to have to play almost perfectly,” JCHS coach Jerry Bomholt told WPGW radio after the loss. “They’re better than we are. They’re more athletic. That’s the best team we’re going to play all year long.”
The loss drops the Patriots, who had won three in a row, to 7-2. The Titans, who finished 12th in the most recent Class 4A poll, move to 8-2.
Jay County and Arsenal Tech were tied 9-9 at the end of the first quarter before the Titans broke the game open in the second period.
Arsenal Tech drained five 3-pointers in the period, led by Tylan Harris’ three triples.
In all, the Titans made 13 shots from beyond the arc. Rasheed Jones had a game-high 15 points and did of his damage from the perimeter.

Bennett Weitzel led Jay County with 12 points. Blake Bogenschutz had a half dozen points, with Gavin Muhlenkamp ended with four points.
Ethan Dirksen was held to just two points, his fewest in a game since scoring the same total Feb. 19, 2020, in a 52-22 loss to Norwell.
“Dirksen had a difficult shooting night,” Bomholt said. “He told me when I took him out his legs were rubbery. He plays so hard. He was out of gas. He struggled.
“When a kid gives you the effort he does you don’t say much.”
Josh Dowlen and Dirksen were named all-tournament players following the conclusion of the final.
The Patriots return to action Dec. 30 at Muncie Central.
