Bader earns Jay’s only win at Norwell
OSSIAN — A junior had the team’s only win in the opener.
Mara Bader claimed the lone victory for the Jay County High School girls swim team as it began the 2021-22 season at the Norwell Invitational on Saturday.
The host Knights scored 263 points to win. Angola (214) was second and Oak Hill (170) placed third. Jay County was sixth with 84 points.
Bader, a junior, was first in the 100-yard breaststroke for the best finish by a Patriot on the day. She was also fourth in the 100 butterfly.
In the 100 freestyle, Zion Beiswanger ended 10th, one spot ahead of teammate Emily Dues. Morgan DeHoff was ninth in the 100 backstroke and 11th in the 50 freestyle. Hannah Laux ended 11th in the 100 butterfly, and Emily Dues had the same place in the 100 freestyle. Kenzie Huey took 12th in the 100 backstroke.
Elayna Paro, DeHoff, Beiswanger and Bader teamed to take sixth in the 400 freestyle relay.
The Patriots’ 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay both finished eighth.
Jay 8th wins
Jay County Junior High School’s eighth grade boys basketball team began its season on Monday with a 33-21 victory against the Norwell Knights.
The seventh graders lost, 31-28.
Aiden Phillips scored a game-high 10 points to lead the eighth graders (1-0). For the seventh grade squad (0-1), Jayden Comer led all players with 24 points.
Girls drop opener
OSSIAN — Jay County’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both lost to the host Norwell Knights on Monday in the season opener.
The eighth grade squad fell 47-7, and the seventh grade team lost 32-0.
Reba Ashcraft scored four points to lead the Patriot eighth graders.
Alexis Sibray ended with three points.
