BERNE — The Indians couldn’t quite shake the Starfires during the first quarter.

What a difference another set of eight minutes can make.

Fort Recovery High School’s boys basketball team outscored South Adams 21-7 in the second quarter and cruised to a 69-43 victory against the Starfires on Saturday at Stardome in the season opener for both teams.

It was the first career victory for interim FRHS coach Bob Leverette.

The Indians (1-0) led 17-13 at the end of the first period before exploding for 21 points in the second. Owen Jutte, who was held without a point in the opening frame, scored 10 points in the second. He finished with a game-high 21 points.

Fort Recovery, which led 38-20 at half, pushed the advantage to 53-31 with one quarter to play.

Cale Rammel poured in 19 points to support Jutte, while Daniel Patch scored a dozen points in his varsity debut. Logan Homan added nine points in his first career varsity action.

Jacob Kokone led the Starfires (1-1) with 13 points, and Brady Beall added 11 points.



Girls second

NEW PALESTINE — Jay County’s girls wrestling team crowned two individual champions as it was the runner-up in the New Palestine Invitational on Saturday.

Columbia City scored 148 points to win the championship. Jay County totaled 114 for a distant second, and Northview placed third with 78 points.

Lizzie Dollar (106 pounds) and Mallory Winner (160) were first in their respective weight classes. Jayla Huelskamp was the runner-up at 113 pounds while Tricia Ison took second at 170 pounds.

Emily Manor (126) was fourth, Mattie Affolder (250) placed fifth, Dakota Chowning (120) and Lilly Lothridge (138) were both seventh, and Addison Denney (138) was eighth.



Jay’s 8th wins

Jay County Junior High School’s eighth grade girls basketball team defeated Winchester Driver on Monday, 21-13.

The seventh grade team lost 34-8.

Mya Kunkler led the eighth grade squad with 10 points, one more than Alexis Sibray. Calie Yates chipped in two points.

Macy Brunswick and Natalie May scored four points each for the seventh grade team in its loss.



Bentz takes first

FORT WAYNE — Koden Bentz was first in his weight class as the Jay County Elementary Wrestling Team took six competitors to the Warrior RTC Open on Sunday at Indiana Tech.

Bentz won at 49 pounds in the 8-and-younger age group. Jackson Bonifas (12-and-younger) was third at 84 pounds, and Kyle Abernathy (14-and-younger) was third at 102 pounds.

Morgan Abernathy, Lennox Byrum and Maddox Byrum also competed but did not place.
