FORT RECOVERY — The final pass of the evening fell to the ground.

With it, the Indians’ playoff hopes took a dramatic drop as well.

Fort Recovery High School’s football team, which led by two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, failed to convert what would have been a game-winning 2-point conversion in overtime Friday night in a heartbreaking 27-26 loss to the St. Johns Blue Jays.

The Indians (3-6, 1-6 Midwest Athletic Conference) seemed headed for their fourth win, which would have put them in strong position for a playoff berth, when they took a 20-6 lead on Troy Homan’s touchdown reception from Cale Rammel with just four minutes to play Friday night. But St. Johns responded with two TDs in a span of just over two minutes to force overtime and then scored on their first extra possession for a 27-20 lead.

FRHS responded, with Cale Rammel recording a 15-yard run before scoring on a 1-yarder. Faced with a big decision, coach Brent Niekamp decided to go for the win rather than the tie and another overtime period. But Rammel’s pass attempt to Troy Homan fell incomplete to leave the home team with a one-point defeat.

St. Johns (3-6, 3-4 MAC) never led in regulation as FRHS scored the first points early in the second quarter. The Blue Jays pulled even on their next drive, and the score remained 6-6 until well into the second half. The Indians got a 1-yard TD run from Rammel with 30 seconds left in the third quarter, and then Rammel hit Homan in the fourth quarter for the 14-point lead.
But St. Johns marched down the field, pulled to within seven points on a Nolan Schwinnen 4-yard pass to Gavin Fittro and recovered the ensuing onside kick. It needed just three plays to score again, as Schwinnen and Fittro connected on a 45-yard touchdown pass and Braylon Metzger tied the game with his extra-point kick. Fort Recovery had a final possession in regulation, but made it only to its own 42-yard line.

Hiser had 113 rushing yards on 28 attempts for Fort Recovery and Rammel added 65 yards on eight attempts. Rammel also completed 6 of his 11 pass attempts for 63 yards and a TD.

Schwinnen went 12-of-20 passing for St. Johns for 201 yards and three touchdowns, including the two to Fittro in the fourth quarter.

The loss hurt the Indians’ playoff chances. They had been 13th in the Division VI Region 24 computer rankings this week. The top 16 teams in each region make the playoffs.

FRHS closes the regular season Friday when it visits New Bremen (6-3, 4-3, MAC).
