COLUMBUS GROVE, Ohio — The Tribe girls are champions.
They’ll have an Indian boy competing at regional as well.
Fort Recovery High School’s girls cross country team had four of the top 12 spots Saturday in claiming the OHSAA Division III Northwest District 2 championship at Columbus Grove.
The Indians, who were state qualifiers last season, scored 45 points for the title. New Bremen (54) and Parkway (58) were second and third, respectively.
The top three teams and individuals not on advancing teams who finish in the top 12 advance to the regional meet, set for Saturday at Tiffin.
Ellie Will, a sophomore, led the FRHS girls by placing third in 20 minutes, 33.4 seconds. Classmate Jenna Hart was two spots behind in 20:55.9. Freshman Joelle Kaup (21:37.4) and junior Alexis Wendel (21:38.1) were back-to-back in 11th and 12th, respectively, while junior Caitlin Weitzel (22:35.5) completed the team score by taking 18th in 22:35.5.
Taylor Spencer of Waynesfield-Goshen was the race winner in 20:00.4 in earning an individual regional berth. Haley Alig (second) of Coldwater and Carli Martz (sixth) of Ottoville also qualified as individuals.
Fort Recovery, which was 13th in the state last season, was fourth at the regional meet a week earlier.
Lincolnview won the boys’ title with its score of 44. New Bremen (64) was second and Minster (72) finished third. Fort Recovery totaled 178 points for seventh out of nine scoring teams.
Sophomore Trevor Heitkamp was fourth overall to advance to regional. He had a time of 16:59.2.
At last year’s regional meet, Heitkamp placed 89th.
Lima Perry senior Braden Yingst won in 15:45.4.
Ethan Evers and Evan Evers placed 36th and 38th, respectively, for Fort Recovery. Ethan had a time of 19:37.5, while Evan ended in 19:46.1.
Caleb Rammel placed 49th in 21:22.4, and Aiden Heitkamp rounded out the team total by finishing 60th in 25:06.3.
Hunter Sidle (second) of Allen East and Lanny Oakman (sixth) of Spencerville were individual qualifiers.
Also competing for the FRHS girls were Anna Roessner (21st – 22:44.8) and Megan Diller (28th – 23:27.8); for the boys were Christian Marchal (61st – 26:08.4) and Caden Marchal (65th – 29:07.7).
