The Bruins were no match for the Patriots, even with a bit of a changed lineup.

Jay County High School’s boys tennis team cruised past the Blackford Bruins on Monday, 5-0.

Seniors Gavin Myers and Crosby Heniser teamed to play together for the first time, and they topped Derrick Elliot and Jeffry Clark 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Austin Dirksen and Isaac Miller got a 6-3, 6-0 win over Damon Thompson and Lucas Penrod in their No. 2 doubles tilt.

Abraham Dirksen moved up to No. 1 singles as Heniser opted to play doubles, and Dirksen picked up a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jake Ludwig. Simon Dirksen defeated Charlie Crabtree 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Blackford forfeited the No. 2 singles contest.

In junior varsity action, Jay County’s Soichiro Oyama got an 8-2 win against Grayson Foreman.

Jay County (8-6, 0-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) hosts Adams Central at 5 p.m. tonight for senior night.



Patriots seventh


NOBLESVILLE — Jay County’s volleyball team went 2-2 to finish seventh Saturday in the Noblesville Invitational.

The Patriots (4-7) lost to Class A No. 4 Wes-Del 20-25, 25-21, 15-8 and Shelbyville 25-20, 25-14, before wins over Western (25-15, 25-18) and Huntington North (25-23, 25-21.

Madison Dirksen finished with 28 kills and 22 service points while also adding four aces and four blocks. Abbie Fields was second with 18 kills to go with 22 digs. Madison Brunswick and Fields shared the team lead with five blocks.

Izzy Rodgers racked up 52 assists, 16 digs and six kills. Defensively, Brenna Haines led the Patriots with 55 digs. She had 16 service points as well.

Rayln Chaffins posted a team-high eight aces.



Wood seventh, boys 11th


LYNN — Lindy Wood finished seventh as the Jay County cross country teams competed in the Randolph Southern Invitational on Saturday.

The Patriot boys were 11th with 233 points. Monroe Central scored 36 to win, with Richmond (88) second and Muncie Central (90) third.

Jay County’s girls did not have enough runners for a team score.

Wood, a senior, set a new career-best by crossing the finish line in 21 minutes, 19 seconds. Maria Sanches was 41st, and Lucy Raines made her high school debut by finishing 48th.

Aaron Funkhouser paced the JCHS boys by placing 33rd. Sebastian Solis and Dustin Harris were 55th and 56th, respectively. Taven Fosnaugh ended 59th, while Seth Wilson placed 60th.



Fort falls to Tigers

Fort Recovery’s boys golf team fell to the Versailles Tigers, 175-188, on Monday at Portland Golf Club.

It was the fifth consecutive loss for the Indians (2-9, 1-7 Midwest Athletic Conference).

Cole Muhlenkamp shot 43 as the best score for Fort Recovery. He was one stroke off creating a three-way tie for match medalist honors. Justin Heitkamp and Keegan May of Versailles led the field with matching scores of 42.

Isaac LeFevre and Alex Dues shot 57 as the Tribe’s No. 2 score. Carson Siefring and Eli Lennartz both had 51 to round out the team total.

Matthew Romer also competed, but his round of 57 was not a factor.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team suffered a loss as well, 215-217. Reece Evers led FRHS with 52, one strike ahead of Brennan Dues and two ahead of Gavin Faller. Drew Backs and Sage Wendel both ended with 58.
