FORT RECOVERY — The Indians got on the board first.
Their advantage was short-lived. And it never returned.
After taking a 6-0 lead, the Fort Recovery High School football team gave up five consecutive touchdowns before finally scoring again late in their 35-12 loss Friday to the visiting Versailles Tigers.
Fort Recovery (2-3, 0-3 Midwest Athletic Conference) halted the first possession for the Tigers when Logan Homan forced and recovered a fumble. Six plays later, Cale Rammel connected on a 19-yard touchdown pass with Homan.
It took Versailles (4-1, 2-1 MAC) just six plays to pull even when Carson Bey ran in from 19 yards out. Chase McEldowney’s extra point gave the visitors to the lead and they never looked back.
The Tigers scored again on a Landon Henry 1-yard run on the final play of the opening quarter. They pushed their lead to 28-6 at halftime thanks to second-quarter TDs by Eli McEldowney on a 43-yard pass from Bey and Jack Osborne on a 2-yard run.
Henry’s 43-yard TD run in the third quarter made it 35-6 before Rammel hit Reece Guggenbiller for a 70-yard scoring pass for Fort Recovery with just 1:41 left in the game.
Versailles was balanced on offense, with 212 yards both rushing and passing. Bey completed all but one of his 10 pass attempts for 152 yards and the TD before giving way to Conner Stonebraker late in the game. Five of those passes went to McEldowney for 90 yards. Henry totaled 99 yards on just six carries, Bey had 52 yards on seven runs and Osborne totaled 49 yards on 12 attempts.
Rammel was 18-of-31 passing for Fort Recovery with two touchdowns. Troy Homan caught five passes for 39 yards, and Guggenbiller had four receptions for 100 yards.
The Indians will head on the road next week to play St. Henry.
