YORKTOWN — The Jay County High School girls cross country team scored as a squad for the first time this season.

They ended up seventh Saturday in the Yorktown Jim Leffler Invitational.

Lawrence North scored 43 points for the win, with New Castle (55) and Yorktown (69) second and third, respectively. The Patriots, competing for the first time as a full team, totaled 144 points.

Lawrence North also won the boys race with 41 points. Muncie Central (81) was the runner-up, and Wapahani (94) placed third. Jay County had 275 points for 11th.

Lindy Wood paced the JCHS girls by finishing sixth in 22 minutes, 12 seconds. Maria Sanches (26:17) was 41st, and Natalie Carreno (26:48) ended 44th. Willow Hardy (27:48) made her debut and ended 53rd, while Lucy Raines (28.26) placed 57th.

Dustin Harris was the lead Patriot boy, taking 49th in 20:33. Sebastian Solis (20:44) and Seth Wilson (20:48) were back-to-back in 51st and 52nd, respectively. Taven Fosnaugh (21:14) placed 58th and Owen Ransom (22:14) finished 65th.

Two score three

A pair of Jay County players each had hat tricks in leading the Patriot girls soccer team to a 7-1 victory Saturday against the Centerville Bulldogs.

It’s the third win in four games for the Patriots (5-3-1).

Mara Bader and Gabi Bilbrey both scored three goals — the second time this year they’ve had a hat trick in the same game — and the offensive outburst keeps their battle for the team’s leading scorer an even race. They each now have 12 goals.

Tricia Ison, after making four saves as goalkeeper, played the field and scored the first goal of her career. Angel Clairday then turned away five Bulldog shots in goal.

GREENVILLE, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s girls cross country team scored 34 points to win the Blackhawk Invitational on Saturday at Greenville City Park.

New Bremen (54) was second and Arcanum (66) placed third.

New Bremen’s boys scored 42 points for first, edging Marion Local by one. Alter ended third with 69 points, and Fort Recovery was fifth with 136 points.

Alexis Wendel led the FRHS girls by placing fifth in 22 minutes, 44 seconds. Ellie Will (22:46) was seventh, Megan Diller (22:50) eighth, Anna Roessner (22:58) ended ninth and Jenna Hart (23:04) placed 10th.
