The Patriots held the Elwood Panthers scoreless to win their season opener.
Jay County High School’s baseball team hosted Elwood on Thursday, winning 8-0 with a dominant performance from a trio of pitchers.
The Patriots (1-0) scored their first run of the season in the bottom of the first, when Cody Rowles hit a double to right field that scored Josh Dowlen. That would be enough as Sam Myers, Kade Sommers and Christian Runkle shut out the Panthers (0-1) by only allowing two hits and five walks while striking batters out 12 times.
Myers recorded the win, giving up three walks and striking out five in three innings.
Jay County’s offense also was produced by committee, with five different players recording RBIs, four recording hits, six reaching base on walks and five crossing home plate.
Dowlen led the Patriots with three runs, an RBI, a walk and a hit.
The Panthers’ only hits came from Bracken Jetty and Keeghan Davenport, both in the top of the sixth inning.
Elwood’s Luke Jones was saddled with the loss, giving up three earned runs over 2 1/3 innings pitched.

The Patriots (3-0) scored four immediate runs in the first inning thanks to a Lykins double, a sacrifice fly from Jozey Shimp and a two-run single from Taylor Brown.
They scored four runs over the next three innings.
A six-run fifth inning ended the game early. The Patriots went on a two-out rally, including three-run home runs from Lykins and Schwieterman.
