FORT WAYNE — A former Indian did everything he could to give the TinCaps a chance to win.

They were just never able to score.

Nick Thwaits, a 2018 Fort Recovery High School graduate, tossed three scoreless innings of relief for the Fort Wayne TinCaps in their season opener Thursday as they fell 1-0 to the visiting West Michigan Whitecaps.

The only run of the game came in the second inning and Thwaits entered the game in the fourth in relief of Jairo Iriarte. He gave up a one-out single and a walk in the inning, but the Whitecaps were never able to muster anything else.

Thwaits retired the final eight batters he saw, striking out Roberto Campos — he is the No. 15 prospect in the Detroit Tigers’ system — looking to end the sixth inning before handing the ball off to Alan Mundo to finish the game. He recorded four strikeouts in his three innings.

The strong start continued where Thwaits left off last season with the TinCaps, the High A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, as he posted a 1.52 ERA over his final 13 appearances.

Pitchers power

ROCKFORD, Ohio — Strong pitching and timely hitting helped the Indians take down the Parkway Panthers.

Fort Recovery High School’s baseball team traveled Thursday to Rockford where they beat the host Panthers 2-1 thanks to a seventh-inning single from Caden Grisez.

With the game tied 1-1, pitcher Alex Dues led off the seventh inning with a single past shortstop Devon Crouch and then stole second base. Landon Post laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Dues to third, setting up Grisez to drive Dues and give the Indians (3-1, 1-0 Midwest Athletic Conference) a 2-1 lead.

It was the first run since the first inning when Wyatt Bihn hit a double and later scored on an error committed by Panther third baseman Jackson Kraner.

The Panthers’ (4-2, 0-1 MAC) only run came in the bottom of the sixth on Bryce Stearns' single that scored Caiden Berry.

Dues picked up the win, going the distance and striking out nine batters while allowing only five hits.

Berry suffered the loss in three innings of relief.

Softball falls

FORT RECOVERY — An early deficit spelled the Indians’ demise and gave them their first loss of the season.

The Fort Recovery softball team hosted the Parkway Panthers on Thursday afternoon, losing 7-4.

After two outs, a walk and a single, Sophie Pearson was almost out of the first inning.

However, a dropped third strike that got past Maddie Guggenbiller allowed the first run to score for the Panthers (5-1, 1-0 Midwest Athletic Conference). Four more runs scored in the second inning, giving them a 5-0 lead from which the Indians (2-1, 0-1 MAC) would never come back.

The Indians’ runs came from a Pearson double in the third inning that drove in two, a stolen base and an error that scored Emma Will in the fifth, and a double from Jenna Homan in the seventh.

Homan came on in relief, giving up only two more runs in the final five innings.
