The Patriots picked up their first win of the season.
The Jay County High School boys golf team took down the host Wapahani Raiders by eight strokes in Thursday's match at Cardinal Hills Golf Course 180-188.
The Patriot’s No. 1 Caleb DeRome led the way, shooting a 42 during the nine-hole match. Liam Garringer was right behind him with a 43.
For the first time in the young season, freshman Cody DeHoff cracked the top three scores for the Patriots (1-0) with a 47.
Gage Sims shot a 48 to be the final scorer for JCHS on the day.
Luke Fugiett’s 53 did not factor into the final score.
The junior varsity team shot 213.
Isaac Homan tied with DeRome’s score of 42.
Senior Austin Dirkson and freshman Dominick Bright both shot under 60 with 54 and 56, respectively.
The final two scores for the JV team were 61 for Sylas Wenk and 62 for Luke Muhlenkamp.
Tennis wins 5-0
BLUFFTON — The Jay County girls tennis team swept the Bluffton Tigers 5-0 Thursday, only dropping one set in the entire match.
Brenna Haines and Brenna Bailey both cruised to victory in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches against Emma Schwartz (6-2, 6-2) and Gretchen Crist (6-1, 6-3).
No. 1 doubles duo Kaylee and Melana Zimmerman had the quickest victory, winning 6-1, 6-2.
Maggie Dillon took down Hazel Pfister in straight sets, holding her off in the second for a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Meredith Dirkson and Sophie Sprunger took three sets to defeat Ella Wheeler and Kinzie Fiecher. They won the first set 6-4, before dropping the second 4-6. They were able to pull out the win 6-4 in the final set.
The Patriots (3-1) have won two matches in a row.
The Jay County JV won six out of eight matches.
Track drops two
YORKTOWN — Jay County’s track teams came up short against a pair of sectional rivals Thursday with the girls scoring 43 points to finish behind Delta (64) and Yorktown (59). The boys totaled 32 as they trailed Delta (78) and the host Tigers (59).
Sophomore Morgan DeHoff came up with one of the two first-place finishes for the Patriot girls, recording a career-best time of 57 seconds flat to take the 300-meter hurdles. Senior Gabi Bilbrey won the discus at 121 feet, 1 inch.
The boys also had two first-place finishes, with Tony Wood earning the only individual victory in the 400 dash (53.60). He was also part of the winning 4x800 relay, teaming with Brayden Collins, Dylan Marentes and Joseph Boggs for a time of 8 minutes, 42 seconds.
Nearly no-hit
The Jay County baseball team had a rough outing Thursday in a 14-1 loss to the Yorktown Tigers in five innings.
Yorktown (7-2) jumped on the Patriots (3-3) early, taking advantage of four straight batters reaching base on walks and being hit by pitches to begin the game.
A double and a pair of singles gave the Tigers a 6-0 lead in the first inning and they never looked back.
The Tigers scored multiple runs in every inning other than the fourth.
Jade Limbrock earned the win, only giving up a home run to Carter Fugiett that broke up his no-hitter.
Cody Rowles suffered the loss for the Patriots, giving up six runs on one hit without recording an out.
Yorktown’s top hitters were Jackson Furnish with three runs, two RBIs and a home run and Jacob Grim who had two runs, hits and RBIs apiece.
Three bogies
WINCHESTER — The Jay County junior high school golf team opened the season with a win over Driver at Winchester Golf Club.
The Patriots shot a team score of 149 to Driver’s 156.
Jacob Weitzel shot a team-best 34, with bogies on the second and third holes at WGC. Right behind him was Jayden Comer, who also shot a bogey on No. 2.
The final two scores for the Patriots came from Dawson Goldsworthy and Jenson Avery with 39 and 41, respectively.
