FORT RECOVERY — The Indians will have a new face leading the girls next season.
Fort Recovery School Board hired Tyler Deitsch as the new high school girls basketball coach Monday.
He will be taking over for Holly Gann, who announced she was stepping down in March. Gann was the coach for four seasons, leading the Tribe to a 47-44 record and a sectional championship during that time frame.
This will be Deitsch’s first head coaching job after serving as an assistant coach for Parkway over the past seven seasons. He graduated from Parkway in 2011 before returning as a coach in 2016.
“I am beyond excited,” Deitsch said. “I’ve had two great mentors over the past few years at Parkway with Linda Hawk and Dan Williamson teaching me a lot about coaching and basketball in general.
“Being able to grow with those coaches has taught me so much and made me want more and more out of basketball each year. Now I’m at the point where I feel like I’m ready to take on the head coaching role and am super excited about it.”
A major reason Deitsch was drawn to the position is the rich history the Fort Recovery girls basketball team has had. He noted the teams that had won state championships in the 1990s and others that made deep tournament runs in more recent years. (The Indians were in the state final four in 2011.)
“Kind of knowing a little bit more about Fort Recovery than what I did some of the other schools did help play an advantage,” Deitsch said. “It’s definitely exciting to come into this type of a program that has the tradition and the community support Fort Recovery has.”
The Indians struggled last season, finishing 7-14 and losing in the opening round of the sectional tournament to conference rival Coldwater. The defensive-minded coach will look to usher the Indians back to their winning ways.
“Through the way that we’re going to play and the fun that we are going to have while we do it — I think that will grow a culture of people who want to be a girls basketball player,” Deitsch said.
Deitsch said he is excited for the opportunity to be the next Fort Recovery girls basketball head coach and looks forward to developing relationships with the student athletes to help them grow as both players and young adults.
“It’s awesome,” he added. “I’m super pumped about having this opportunity with Fort Recovery.”
