FRANKTON — The Patriots are gaining momentum, but not without some drama.

Brenna Haines earned a three-set victory and the No. 1 doubles team of Kaylee and Melana Zimmerman won in a super tiebreaker as the Jay County High School girls tennis team topped the Frankton Eagles 4-1.

Haines took a while to get going as she dropped the first set 6-1 to Addie Brobston before rallying for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory. The Zimmerman twins started strong against Launa Hamaker and Sloane Harrison of Frankton before dropping the second set and then bouncing back in the super tiebreaker for a 6-1, 0-6, 10-4 win.

Maggie Dillon had the most dominant performance of the day for JCHS (4-1), beating Haylee Niccum 6-4 and 6-1 in the No. 3 singles match. Meredith Dirksen and Sophie Sprunger won the sixth match in their young careers, defeating Chloe Harris and Lily Hall 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Brenna Bailey suffered the only Patriot loss, falling 6-1, 6-2 to Emily Bilyeu at No. 2 singles.

Daisy Muhlenkamp, Chloe Ruiz and Zion Beiswanger picked up wins for JV.



Boys golf splits with ACAC?rivals

WARREN — The Jay County boys golf team shot 198 Tuesday in a three-team meet against Allen County Athletic Conference rivals Bluffton and Southern Wells at Dogwood Glen Golf Course.

The Patriots’ score was good for second place, finishing two strokes better than Southern Wells (200) and 20 strokes behind first-place Bluffton (178).

Caleb DeRome finished with a team-best 41. His score was the best among all competing golfers, only one stroke better than Bluffton’s Keegan Schwartz.

Juniors Gage Sims and Liam Garringer once again finished in the middle of the participating Patriots, with scores of 48 and 53, respectively.

Cody DeHoff was the final qualifying score shooting a 56.

Luke Fugiett shot 58 but did not factor into the team total.



Track trails Bulldogs

BLUFFTON — The Jay County track teams both came up short Tuesday in a meet with the Bluffton Tigers and the Celina Bulldogs.

The boys finished third with a score of 29.5 while the girls were second with 46.5. The Bulldogs took first place for both boys (73) and girls (95.5).

Isaac Kunkler provided the only first-place finish for the boys team. It came in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.7 seconds.

The girls also earned first place in the 300 hurdles thanks to Cash Hollowell’s time of 52.2.

Other victories for the girls include the 800 run on Alexis Sibray’s time of 2 minutes and 38.9 seconds and the 4x400 relay (4:34.3).

The boys got second place finishes in all three relays.



Jetmore delivers

The Jay County JV baseball team dominated the Bluffton Tigers on Tuesday when Brady Jetmore threw a no-hitter to lead the Patriots to a 12-0 victory.

Jetmore only allowed one baserunner in the game on a walk, earning the win as he struck out eight batters.

Isaac Miller, Garrett Bennett and Peyton Yowell took care of the other side of the ball for the Patriots. Miller provided two hits and three RBIs while Bennett and Yowell both added two RBIs.

Gavin Sawyer was saddled with the loss for the Tigers, allowing nine runs on eight hits through 1 2/3 innings.



JH golfers fall

RICHMOND — Jay County Junior High School’s golf team fell six strokes short on Tuesday, losing to Richmond 198-214 at Richmond Elks Golf Course.

The Patriots’ Jayden Comer shot the best score of the day with 49 over the nine holes.

The other three scores for Jay County all stayed below 60 strokes, with Dawson Goldsworthy shooting 51, Jacob Weitzel scoring 55 and Jensen Avery at 59.

Tobe Swartentruber and Kaden Sims’ scores of 66 and 67 respectively did not factor into the final.
