ANSONIA, Ohio — Fighting through rain and cold temperatures, the Patriot girls only had three first-place finishes, but it was enough to win them the meet.
Gabi Bilbrey and Chelsea Frontz combined for one win to go along with victories in the 4x100-meter and 4x400 relays Friday as the Jay County High School girls track team finished first in the Tiger Relays hosted by Ansonia. The boys team placed third.
The JCHS girls scored 79 points to beat runner-up Covington by 17. The boys totaled 55 as they trailed Covington (68) and the host Tigers (64)
Bilbrey and Frontz earned first place in the discus relay with a combined distance of 206 feet, 9 inches.
The 4x100-meter relay and 4x400 relay teams also contributed first-place finishes with times of 54.29 seconds and four minutes, 33.81 seconds, respectively.
Five second-place finishes helped propel the Patriots above the rest of the field.
The three victories for the Jay County boys came in the 4x400 (3:46.11), 4x800 (8:50.26) and the middle-distance relay (6:25.2).
Myers walks off
Sam Myers blasted a three-run, walk-off home run Monday to lift the Jay County baseball team to a 9-8 victory over the visiting Monroe Central Golden Bears.
The victory followed a 22-1 battering Saturday of the host Randolph Southern Rebels.
On Monday, the Patriots had a 6-5 lead but saw it disappear as a pair of errors and a single by Blake Bogue of Monroe Central resulted in three runs.
But Myers was ready to be the hero.
The junior came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs and two teammates on base. He watched one ball before blasting his second home run of the year to earn Jay County (6-6) the victory.
Myers also picked up the win, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings.
Nothing could keep the Patriots’ bats quiet on Saturday, as Jackson Edwards and Andrew Schemenaur spearheaded Jay County’s offense with a combined five hits and nine RBIs.
Edwards also earned the win, throwing three innings and striking out eight batters.
Williams delivers
SELMA — The Jay County softball team picked up its 12th win of the season, defeating the Wapahani Raiders 12-1 Monday. The Patriots’ score matched their new team record.
In only her second game of the season, Kiley Williams’ bat came alive as she went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs. Along with Williams, Taylor Brown, Mady Fraley and Renna Schwieterman all contributed multiple hits and RBIs.
The Patriots scored all of their runs in the second, third and fourth innings, as they scored three, four and five runs, respectively.
Mallory Winner had a strong performance in the circle for the Patriots, throwing all five innings and striking out six. She surrendered one unearned run on three hits.
The only run for the Raiders scored in the fourth inning, when Briley Kahohikomo reached the plate on a passed ball.
Bounce back
Jay County’s golf team put on two vastly different performances Saturday and Monday.
The Patriots had their best outing of the season Monday, shooting 165 to defeat sectional rivals Winchester (179) and Monroe Central (182). The victory followed their fourth-place finish out of five teams Saturday — they scored 367 to trail champion Bluffton by 30 — in the South Adams Invitational.
DeRome shot a 1-over-par 36 for Jay County in the match Monday at Portland Golf Club. Cody DeHoff followed at 42 for the Patriots, whose previous best score this season was a 178. Gage Sims (43) and Liam Garringer (44) rounded out the team score, and Luke Fugiett finished with a 45.
Fugiett, Sims, DeHoff and DeRome all either set or tied their season-best scores.
DeRome was the runner-up Saturday at 79. Trailing him for JCHS were Sims (95), Garringer (96) and DeHoff (97).
JH wins two
ELWOOD — The Jay County junior high baseball team picked up a pair of wins against Elwood on Monday, 8-7 and 11-0.
The Patriots (7-0) have yet to lose a game, but the Panthers gave them a scare in game No. 1.
They scored three runs in the first inning to give them an early 3-1 lead, before surrendering six runs down the stretch of the game. A four-run fifth inning sealed the deal for the Patriots to help them stay undefeated.
Brayden O’Brien earned the win, throwing two innings and surrendering three runs on four hits.
In game two, Jay County took an early lead and never looked back, winning 11-0 before the game was called because of darkness after two and a half innings.
Joe Geesaman was 3-for-3 and drove in four runs.
Brock Wasson pitched both innings for the Patriots without giving up a single hit.
