INDIANAPOLIS -- The dream of ending the season with a state championship came to an end Saturday morning for Tony Wood.
The Jay County High School junior dropped his quarterfinal match 3-1 to ninth-ranked Reese Courtney of Center Grove -- his first loss of the season -- in the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Wood’s day will continue in the consolation bracket, with fifth place as the highest medal he can earn. He will take on No. 6 Michael Major (25-1) of Carmel in the consolation semifinals.
Courtney advances to wrestle No. 5 Jeffrey Huyvaert (48-1) of New Prairie in the semifinals.
The quarterfinal match between Wood, who entered the state finals undefeated and ranked fourth in the state, and Courtney (35-8) came down to the final minute as each wrestle scored an escape following a scoreless first period. Courtney put the pressure on offensively and was able to work to a takedown with 29 seconds left on the clock.
Wood, who is now 42-1, was unable to come up with an escape or a reversal in the waning moments.
Major dropped to the consolation portion of the bracket with a 5-2 quarterfinal defeat against Huyvaert, also his first loss of the season.
With his win over Max McGinley of Cathedral in Friday’s opening round, Wood guaranteed himself a top-eight finish and a state medal. He is the 18th state medalist in school history and next season will have the opportunity to become just the seventh to win multiple medals.
His win gave the Patriots a state medalist for the seventh time in the last eight seasons following Cameron Clark last year, Mason Winner from 2017 through 2020, Gavin Hare in 2018 and Andy Kohler in 2016.
JCHS wrestlers Cody Rowles, Christian WIttkamp and Cameron Clark saw their seasons end with opening-round losses Friday.
