The Jay County Swimmers fell to Wells Community by 70 points in the Wabash Valley Conference Relays on June 10.
Despite winning 44 of 82 total events, they fell by only seven points to Wells on Thursday.
Depth carried Wells Community to a 632-625 victory over the Jay County Summer Swim Team on Thursday, handing Jay County their first loss in a dual meet this season.
The Swimmers dominated the 11-12-year-old girls events. They had first, second and third place finishes in both the 100-meter freestyle and the butterfly and the top two finishers for the 50 freestyle and individual medley. Maria Laux earned victories in both of the freestyle events as well as the breaststroke while Elly Byrum took care of the butterfly, individual medley and backstroke.
Jay County also had complete control of the 9-10-year-old girls events. They took the top three places in the 25 freestyle (Addisyn Champ won), 50 freestyle (Champ), butterfly (Sophie Warvel), and backstroke (Carsyn Guggenbiller). They also earned first and second place in the individual medley, with Champ winning the event.
Three more swimmers were triple-event winners, those being Cora Arnold for the 8-and-younger girls, Grady Warvel for the 11-12-year-old boys and Mara Bader for the 15-and-older girls.
Indians blow out Loramie
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery ACME baseball team blew out Fort Loramie 20-3 on Thursday.
The Indians broke the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Reece Wendel reached base on a dropped third strike before swiping second and third base. Caden Grisez hit a single to plate Wendel, and later came around to score on a single by Alex Gaerke.
Fort Recovery broke the game open in the second inning when they scored nine runs. Mason Diller, Wendel, Gaerke and Sage Wendel all hit RBI-doubles (Sage Wendel’s being a three-RBI-double) in the frame.
The Indians would score nine more runs in the fourth inning to end the game after four and a half innings. Gaerke finished with five RBIs while Sage Wendel and Diller added four.
Alex Dues earned the win after not giving up a single hit in two innings of work. Sage Wendel pitched two innings of relief, giving up three runs on one hit before Troy Homan finished the final inning on the bump.
Lions win
Lions Club of Portland Junior League Willie Mays baseball took down Kiwanis 12-5 on Thursday.
Cruz Darby and Finn Hemmelgarn had half of the team’s hits, each smacking a double and a single for Lions Club.
Karson Schilling’s triple was the only hit for Kiwanis in the game. He also drew a walk.
Benson Armstrong also reached base twice for Kiwanis, earning two walks.
Williams, Cook’s tie
The Portland Junior League Rookie baseball game between Williams Auto Parts and Cook’s Nursery ended in a 9-9 tie on Thursday.
Cook’s Nursery had three home runs in the game coming from Reid Wendel, Kayden Alberson and Steven Robbins. Wendel also smashed two doubles and a triple, Alberson hit a double and Robbins tallied two singles.
For Williams Auto Parts, Parker Huntsman also hit a home run. He also hit a double to help him finish with two runs and two RBIs.
Hayden Franks and Brett Huntsman both scored twice as well. Franks had two singles and a triple while Brett Huntsman hit a double and a single to drive in a run.
