The Rock has captured the first Portland Junior League championship of the 2023 season.
The Rock took down Fisher Meets 9-5 in the Portland Junior League Minor softball championship on Wednesday night.
An inside-the-park home run by Ellie Wiggins fueled the victory for The Rock.
Aleah McIntire and Kendall Snow both scored a team-high two runs, while Shylynn Blowers, Emmy Clark, Gabi Miller and Wiggins all added one.
Wiggins, McIntire and Maggie Westgerdes handled business in the circle, giving up five runs over six innings.
Kyla Sims scored twice for Fisher Meats in the game. Haley Comer, Brooklyn McGill and Kendyl Walker scored the other three runs for the team.
Late game loss
FORT WAYNE — The Portland Rockets couldn’t hold onto its lead late in the game, as the Northeast Kekionga scored five runs in the eighth inning to beat Portland 13-10 on Wednesday.
The Kekionga led off the eighth inning with a home run to left field, a double, single, walk and a passed ball to score a second run. The Rockets finally forced the fifth batter of the inning to ground out before Northeast followed up with another single and double that plated three more runners.
Sam Dunlavy was saddled with the loss, surrendering three runs without recording an out in the eighth inning.
Joel Kennedy had another good day at the plate for the Rockets, smacking two doubles and a single that drove in five runs in the game.
Peyton Smith and Quinn Faulkner also had multiple hits for the Rockets, with Smith driving in two runs.
Cook’s advances
Cook’s Nursery took down Pak-A-Sak 13-9 in the semifinal game of the Portland Junior League Rookie boys baseball tournament.
With the win, Cook’s Nursery will move onto the championship game against Pioneer Packaging tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Hunter Hamilton and Trey Hirschy hit a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate. Both scored two runs in the game while Hamilton also drove two runs home.
Reid Wendel led Cook’s Nursery in RBIs with three, coming on two triples and a double. Wendel came around to score all three times.
Brantley Sager and Steven Robbins both drove two runs home as well.
Kayden Alberson also hit three singles and scored two runs for Cook’s
Pak-A-Sak’s top hitter in the game was Landyn Wright. He had a home run and two doubles to drive in four runs for Pak-A-Sak.
Cage Reynolds also had three hits in the contest.
Rounding out the offense was Ricky Heitkamp, Carson Pryor, Kasen Rowles and Maverick Price with two hits apiece.
