The weather did its best to disrupt the Jay County swimmers.
It was going to take more than a 20-minute delay to knock the swimmers off though.
The Jay County Summer Swim Team fought through being iced by the rain to come out and beat Randolph County 843-180 on Thursday night.
Jay County earned victories in 17 out of 18 relays and 56 of the 62 individual events. They swept the 9-10-year-old, 11-12-year-old and 15-and-older events in the meet.
Mara Bader was the only triple-winner at 15-and-older level as she won the long freestyle, breaststroke and short freestyle.
Addisyn Champ, Sam Benirschke and Jackson Westgerdes all earned victories in three events for the 9-10-year-olds. Champ took the long freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke, Benirschke won the long freestyle butterfly and short freestyle and Westgerdes placed first in the backstroke, individual medley and breaststroke.
Jay County’s triple-event winners at the 11-12-year-old level were Gabby Gibson (backstroke, individual medley and breaststroke) and Grady Warvel (butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke).
Cooper Glentzer was the only swimmer with three wins at the 13-14-year-old level as he won the long freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke.
At the 8-and-younger age, Cora Arnold won the butterfly, breaststroke and short freestyle and Henry Warvel won the butterfly, backstroke and individual medley.
ACME falters
COLDWATER, Ohio — The Fort Recovery ACME baseball team couldn’t jump start its offense early enough, as they fell to the Coldwater ACME baseball team 6-2 on Thursday in the semifinal of the sectional tournament.
With the loss, Fort Recovery moved to the loser’s bracket semifinal to play Marion Local in another semifinal game for the chance to rematch Coldwater in the championship and earn a spot in the regional tournament hosted by Fort Recovery.
The Cavaliers attacked the Indians early, scoring in the top of the first on a double by Cale Wenning.
They would add to their lead with a pair of two-run innings in the third and sixth to make a 5-0 ballgame.
The Indians would score their first run in the bottom of the sixth. Gavin Faller and Troy Homan drew walks before Sage Wendel reached base on a dropped third strike. Faller would score on an error by the pitcher during the process.
The Cavaliers would earn that run back in the top of the seventh to keep a five-run lead.
The Indians scored one more run in the final frame on a ball Faller hit for a fielder’s choice. Faller had the only RBI for Fort Recovery.
Reece Wendel was the only Indian to record multiple hits.
Caden Grisez was saddled with the loss after surrendering five runs over six innings.
