INDIANAPOLIS — A push to set thresholds for four-class sports is on hold.
The Indiana High School Athletic Association board of directors on Monday tabled a proposal that would change the way schools would be classified in the four class-sports (baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball) during its annual review of bylaws Monday.
The proposal would make it so that classes would be determined solely by a school’s enrollment, which would keep Jay County High School in Class 3A.
The process currently requires there to be an equal distribution of schools among the four classes, but the new rule would ignore the amount of schools in each class, just focusing on enrollment numbers.
The proposal follows these guidelines:
Class 4A: 1,400 enrollment and up
Class 3A: 600 to 1,399 enrollment
Class 2A: 325 to 599 enrollment
Class 1A: 324 enrollment and below
The decision to table the proposal resulted in the tabling of proposals that affect the Tournament Success Factor.
On Monday, the board also:
•Reduced the number of participating schools to 100 in emerging sports required for the IHSAA to sponsor them and provide a state tournament.
•Reduced the number of practices students need to participate in following missing consecutive days of school to be eligible to compete.
•Extended the deadline to renew an officiating license to June 30.
•Approved a September 1 deadline for schools to notify the IHSAA of their intention to play up in one or more classes.
•Reduced the number of pre-participation practices to be eligible to compete.
