BERNE — The Patriots just couldn’t push any runs across.
The Jay County High School baseball team’s offense struggled Wednesday as it lost to Allen County Athletic Conference rival South Adams 10-0.
The Starfires struck first with a six-run second inning. Eight straight batters reached base on five singles, two walks and a double.
The Patriots had a chance to score earlier in the inning after loading the bases, but a strikeout ended the inning.
Jay County loaded the bases again in the second but couldn’t push any runs across.
Jackson Edwards suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs off of eight hits through 3 1/3 innings. Edwards also had half of the team’s hits, recording singles in the third and fifth innings.
Staying in VII
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Fort Recovery High School will remain in Division VII for football for the next two years.
The OHSAA announced football divisions for 2023 and ’24 Wednesday, with the Indians tied for the 13th-largest school in the state’s lowest enrollment division. (Midwest Athletic Conference rival New Bremen is also tied for 13th-largest with a “football adjusted enrollment” of 108.) Patrick Henry and Covington are the largest schools in the division at 114.
MAC rivals Marion Local (109), Minster (106), St. Henry (101) and St. John’s (59) also in Division VII. Anna, Versailles and Parkway are all in Division VI, while Coldwater is in Division V.
New Bremen and Marion Local are both defending state champions.
Fort Recovery won the 2015 state championship while competing in Division VII. The Indians lost 50-22 to Minster in the opening round of the playoffs last season.
