FORT RECOVERY — The Indians have been shut out five times this year. Thursday night, it was their turn to hold a team scoreless.
Alex Dues went the distance for Fort Recovery High School’s baseball team, holding the New Bremen Cardinals to only two hits in its 3-0 victory.
Dues struck out eight batters in the win and only allowed three baserunners.
The Indians (10-7, 4-4 Midwest Athletic Conference) opened up the scoring in the fourth inning. Two batters reached base on a pair of errors by third baseman Rogan Muether before Cale Rammel tattooed a ball to left field to score the runs.
The final run came in the sixth inning when Bo Thien hit a sacrifice fly to score Daniel Patch.
Nolan Kuenning suffered the loss after surrendering the three runs in six innings.
Early innings
NEW BREMEN, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s softball team dropped its third straight Midwest Athletic Conference matchup Thursday with a 10-5 loss to the New Bremen Cardinals.
The Cardinals attacked the Tribe early, scoring four runs in the first frame. A trio of walks loaded the bases before Alivia Dammeyer hit a bases-clearing double and the following batter hit a sacrifice fly to score her.
New Bremen would score six more runs over the next three innings.
The Tribe had four players contribute two hits, while Ava Grisez added two runs and Kylie Post drove two in.
Sophie Pearson took the loss after giving up four runs on one hit and four walks through one inning in the circle.
Relays fuel
COLDWATER, Ohio — The Tribe track teams came up short Thursday at the Mercer County Meet when the girls finished in second place while the boys finished last.
A pair of relay teams and Mara Pearson helped power the Indians to 99 points, only behind Celina with 172. Trevor Heitkamp had two victories for the boys, but they could only muster up 24 points, while Marion Local ran away with 204.
Pearson’s jump of 17 feet, 9 1/2 inches, was good enough to finish first in the long jump.
The girls 4x400-meter relay and 4x800 relays both took first place with times of 4 minutes, 18.04 seconds, and 10:00.28, respectively.
Heitkamp once again took first place in the 1,600 run and the 3,200 run with times of 4:32.78 and 9:58.12.
