Another day, another mercy-rule walk-off for the Patriots.
Jozey Shimp’s sixth inning double ended the game for the Jay County High School softball team Thursday when it scored Riah Champ to beat Allen County Athletic Conference rival Bluffton 10-0.
Shimp had two hits and two RBIs in the game, while Champ had three hits, scored two runs and hit her eighth home run of the year.
Janae Jacobs added two hits and three RBIs while Mady Fraley had two hits and two RBIs.
Mallory Winner earned the win, giving up only one hit in the first four innings, before Taylor Brown finished off the game only surrendering one additional hit.
The Patriots remained perfect at 3-0 in the conference, boasting an overall record of 15-1 before traveling to Woodlan on Friday (see related story).
Conference loss
Jay County’s tennis team lost 3-2 Thursday to Allen County Athletic Conference rival Adams Central.
The loss to the Jets sets the Patriots ACAC record at 1-2. Depending on the result between South Adams and Bluffton, the Patriots will either finish in third place or as part of a three-way tie for second place.
Maggie Dillon and the pair of Merideth Dirksen and Sophie Sprunger each earned wins for Jay County. Dillon’s No. 3 singles match required both a tie breaker and a third set to decide a winner (6-3, 7-4, 6-2), while the No. 2 doubles team won 6-4, 6-3.
Brenna Haines lost a three-hour long No. 1 singles match. She lost the first set in a tie breaker 7-3 before taking the second 6-4. The Patriots lost the match after Haines fell to another tie breaker 7-0.
Brenna Bailey in the No. 2 singles match and Kaylee and Melana Zimmerman in the No. 1 doubles match both lost by scores of 6-4, 6-2.
Golfers step back
BLUFFTON — Jay County’s boys golf team struggled Thursday night when they shot 191 at Timber Ridge Golf Course to finish third behind Bluffton and first-place Bellmont (162).
Caleb DeRome and Gage Sims both tied for the Patriots’ best scores of 46. Sims birdied the par-3 11th hole and the par-4 14th hole.
Bellmont’s Winston Brown shot 35, one under par, to earn him the title of match medalist.
A pair of pars for sophomore Isaac Homan earned him a 48 to score for the first time this season on varsity.
The final score for The Patriots came from Liam Garringer who shot a 51.
Luke Fugiett’s and Cody DeHoff’s scores of 52 and 53 did not count to Jay County’s total.
First loss
The Jay County Junior High School baseball team lost its first game of the season Thursday to Yorktown, 4-3.
The eighth grade team out-hit Yorktown 7-4 but couldn’t hold its 3-2 lead going into the fifth inning. Yorktown scored two runs in the final frame to beat the Patriots.
Joe Geesaman suffered the loss, giving up four runs on four hits.
The seventh grade team was able to pick up a 5-2 win thanks to a three-run fourth inning.
The Patriots only had three hits in the victory, coming from Alex Miller, Tyler Wasson and Cohen Shimp.
Nick Snow earned the win giving up one run through four innings.
Winning Weitzel
The Junior High Patriots golf team walked away from Thursday’s match against Winchester with a 19 stroke victory at Portland Golf Club.
Jacob Weitzel led the way for Jay County, shooting 30 in the six-hole match which included a birdie on hole No. 2.
Jayden Comer and Jensen Avery were both only one stroke behind him at 31 apiece. Avery also birdied on the second hole.
Dawson Goldsworthy’s pars on holes No. 4 and 8 earned him a score of 33 to round out the Patriots.
Toby Swartzentruber and Kason Sims’ scores of 41 and 44 did not factor into the team score.
Strong offense
The Portland All-Stars 8-and-younger softball team beat Selma 12-5 Thursday.
The team scored a bulk of its runs early with four-run innings in the first and second frame.
Five All-Stars were perfect from the plate, including Carsyn Guggenbiller, Kierstyn White, Emme Theurer, Kendall Snow and Hazel Skirvin.
Theurer hit a single, double and a triple in the contest while also scoring three runs.
Guggenbiller went 4-for-4 while the other four players were 3-for-3 on the day. She also added a triple and three runs.
White also scored three runs. She also contributed a double along with her two singles.
