TALLMADGE, Ohio — Jordyn Champ was at her best on the biggest stage.
The Redkey 11-year-old who competes for JC Tumbling and Gymnastics posted racked up career-best scores, including a 9.525 for third place on the vault, at the 2023 Region 5 USA Gymnastics Xcel Championships this weekend at Summit County Fairgrounds.
Aubree Shannon was fourth in the uneven bars and Bella Sarver finished tied for seventh on the floor exercise.
The meet featured gymnasts from Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky.
It was a big day overall for Champ, whose career-best all-around score of 38.175 was more than a half-point higher than the regional-qualifying total she posted March 18 at the Indiana Xcel State Championships. It was good for sixth place in Level XS Division Senior A in a field of 20 athletes.
In addition to her vault score, she added career-bests of 9.4 for fourth place on the floor exercise and 9.65 for seventh on the bars. She totaled a 9.325 on the balance beam.
Shannon, a Redkey 12-year-old who competed in Level XS Division Senior C, had her best finish with the 9.65 on the bars. She was eighth out of 16 all-around competitors with a 37.6.
She also scored a 9.425 for eighth on the floor, a 9.35 for ninth on the beam and a 9.175 on the vault.
Sarver, 11, Winchester, finished with a 9.45 on the floor for seventh out of 15 athletes in Level XS Division Junior E. She added scores of 9.4 on bars, 9.1 on floor and 8.55 on beam for an all-around total of 36.5.
