DELPHOS, Ohio — The Indians had the lead, but couldn’t quite hold on.
Fort Recovery High School’s softball team fell in its final regular season game 8-7 to the Jefferson Wildcats on Monday.
The game was tied but the Indians couldn’t keep the Wildcats down after an error by Cali Wendel and a double plated the final run of the game to give Jefferson the 8-7 victory.
The Indians originally built a five-run lead through the first three innings thanks to a double from Audra Bubp and three Wildcat errors.
Jefferson got one run back in the bottom of the third but there was no real harm until the fourth inning.
An error and a pair of singles loaded the bases for the Wildcats in the fourth. Krystin Moore was walked to score the first run of the inning. The floodgates then opened, with five more runs scoring on a fielder’s choice, an error by Ava Grisez and three straight singles.
Fort Recovery was able to tie the game in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Kylie Post and a Wildcat error.
Jenna Homan, who pitched every inning other than the six-run fourth, suffered the loss as she gave up two runs on three hits. Neither of the runs she gave up were earned, including the winning run.
Cooks cruises
Cook’s Nursery defeated the Williams Auto Parts on Monday 7-2 in Portland Junior League Rookie baseball.
Kayden Alberson and Reid Wendel led the way for Cook’s, hitting 3-for-3. Alberson had two doubles and three runs scored while Wendel had a double and three RBIs.
Hunter Hamilton joined the party for Cook’s with a home run and four RBIs.
Trey Hirschy rounded out the offensive dominance for Cooks with two runs and two hits.
Williams had multiple hits from Brett Huntsman, Parker Huntsman, Thobe Keller and Hayden Franks.
