PONETO — All of the Patriots came ready to hit and it helped them earn their first Allen County Athletic Conference win.

The collective effort lifted the Jay County High School baseball team to a 9-5 victory over the Southern Wells Raiders on Tuesday.

Jay County (10-11, 1-4 ACAC) struck first when an error and a single in the first inning set up Sam Myers to drive in the first run.

Seven players got hits and six had RBIs. Dusty Pearson had the team’s only extra-base hit with an RBI triple. Drew Schemenaur was the only player with multiple RBIs, with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and a single in the seventh.

Myers earned the win, giving up two runs on four hits in five innings pitched.

The Raiders scored on a sacrifice fly in the first, a wild pitch in the sixth, and on a sacrifice fly, an error and a hit by pitch in the seventh.



Back on track

PONETO — Jay County’s softball team had its way with the Southern Wells Raiders on Tuesday, demolishing them 21-1. The win snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Patriots (16-4, 4-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) jumped on top with a four-run first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Jozey Shimp and a three-run home run from Renna Schwieterman.

Both Schwieterman and Mady Fraley had two home runs while Taylor Brown added another.

Five players had three hits while another five had multiple RBIs. Schwieterman led the way with six.

Brown earned the win, giving up only one run on four hits in four innings. The only run came in the first inning as part of a double steal.



Bailey breakthrough

The Jay County girls tennis team took down sectional rival Randolph Southern 3-2 on Tuesday.

Brenna Bailey dominated the No. 2 singles match, beating Alexis Stump 6-2 in both sets.

It took more work for Kaylee and Melana Zimmerman to put away Brianna Smith and Sophi Chenoweth in the No. 1 doubles contest. They lost the first set in a tiebreaker 7-5 before storming back to take both the second and third sets 6-3.

Meredith Dirksen and Sophie Sprunger once again came out on top in the No. 2 doubles match. They beat Jacy Owens and Jordan Black 6-1, 6-4.

Brenna Haines lost the No. 1 singles match to Kaibre Stephan 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

The Patriots dropped the No. 3 singles contest when Malaih Adams topped Maggie Dillon 6-2, 7-5.



DeRome leads

Caleb DeRome led the Jay County boys golf team to a win over Southern Wells 171-185 Tuesday at Portland Golf Club.

DeRome shot a 39 which was four strokes over par, earning him match medalist honors. He recorded five pars.

Behind him was Gage Sims, who shot 41. Sims had par on three holes, and had a birdie on hole No. 5.

Luke Fugiett scored from the fifth spot again thanks to shooting a 44. He also had a birdie on the fifth hole.

Rounding out the Patriots’ score was Cody DeHoff with 47. The highlight of his day was a birdie on hole No. 7.

Liam Garringer’s score of 52 did not come into play for the team’s total.
