FORT WAYNE — The Patriots accomplished one of coach Dave Haines’ goals for this year, setting a new school record.
The Jay County High School boys golf team earned a first-place finish Wednesday shooting 147 to beat Woodlan (155) and Heritage (165) at McMillen Golf Course.
The score broke the previous record from 2004 by one stroke. While it is the lowest score in school history, it came on a short par-32 course. The team total was 19 strokes over par, compared the 2004 squad — Tyler Johnston (35), Ben Freeman (36), Jesse Shawver (37) and Nathan McClung (40) — that shot 148 at par-35 front nine at Portland Golf Club for an 8-over-par total.
Caleb DeRome was the match medalist, shooting one over par at 33.
The next lowest scorer was Gage Sims with 35.
Sophomore Isaac Homan contributed a 39 to score. Luke Fugiett and Cody DeHoff both tied for 40 to round out the scoring for the Patriots.
Liam Garringer’s score of 41 did not count toward Jay County’s final score.
Double defeat
The Jay County Junior High School baseball teams picked up a pair of wins Tuesday over Daleville. The eighth graders rolled to a 14-2 victory while the seventh graders blanked the Broncos 9-0.
In the eighth grade game, the Patriots had 14 total hits and a nine-run second inning to power them to victory.
Hunter Collins had four RBIs on two hits, including one in the second inning.
Boston Barnett was credited with the win, only allowing two hits and one run in two innings.
Cohen Shimp threw a shutout in the seventh grade game, going the distance and only giving up one hit.
Most of the Patriots’ runs came in a six-run third inning. Braden Wells, Nick Snow and Shimp all drove in runs during the inning.
JH runners 2nd
WINCHESTER — The Jay County junior high track teams both finished in second place Monday night at Driver Middle School.
The girls tallied 49 points, falling just two points short of first place.
They were victorious in five different events including the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400 relay. Abby Fifer won the 1,600 run, Elly Byrum took the 400 dash and Brook Byrum earned the victory in the 800 run.
The boys finished in first place in four events. Kaiden Reynolds had first-place finishes in both the long jump and high jump to lead the boys. Joining him were Raif Beiswenger in the 400 dash and Beckett Bradenburg in the 800 run.
Serving Homestead
Wings and Rings of Portland Junior League Rookie softball beat Homestead 9-1 Wednesday.
Carsyn Guggenbiller and Kierstyn White both scored three runs while going 3-for-3 in the game. Guggenbiller hit a triple while White added a double.
Kendall Evans and Maitlynn Castillo were also both perfect from the plate. Evans smacked three hits while Castillo went 2-for-2.
Rounding out Wings and Rings’ offense were Emme Theurer and Lucy Locke, who both went 2-for-3.
Optimistic batters
Optimist beat Bizy Dips in a high scoring affair Wednesday in Portland Junior League Rookie softball 16-9.
Ava VanSkyock led Optimist with three singles and a double that resulted in four runs.
They also got three runs from Maria Heitkamp, Kynlee Homan and Lizzie Miller. Heitkamp hit two singles and a triple while Homan and Miller both had three singles each.
Rounding out Optimist was Ellie Darby with three singles, one double and two runs.
Bizy Dips were powered by Jo LeMaster and Alyvia Pfeifer, scoring four runs and combining for five hits.
Behind them was Jessa Gardner with three singles that resulted in one run.
Both Hendrix Steed and Josie Taylor added a run and two singles apiece for Bizy Dips.
REMC runs away
Jay County REMC defeated Portland Optimists 12-1 Tuesday in Portland Junior League Rookie softball.
Six batters went 2-for-3 for REMC, including Whitney Schwieterman, who had five RBIs on a single and a double.
Adalyn Overla followed Schwieterman’s lead with two RBIs of her own. Emily Geesaman and Ellie Adams both added one as well.
Josie Snow and Mylee Noggler also had two hits.
Rock rolls
The Rock Church took down Fisher Packing on Tuesday 9-4 in Portland Junior League Rookie softball.
Shylyn Blowers led the way for The Rock with a three-run, inside-the-park home run.
Kayla Sims was Fishers’ top batter, scoring two runs and earning two hits.
Kiwanis wins
Kiwanis won a close game against Display Craft on Monday 10-9 in Portland Junior League Rookie baseball.
Benson Armstrong was 3-for-3 for Kiwanis, hitting a home run and two singles. He also had five strikeouts and earned the save.
Karson Schilling started the game, striking out eight and also going 3-for-3.
Display Craft was led by Benton Langenkamp who had a three-run home run and an inside-the-park home run as well.
Eli Westgerdes started the game for Display Craft, striking out eight batters. He also had three singles in the game.
For Kiwanis, Kellan Tout was 3-for-3 with a double while Tyan Rodgers was 2-for-3.
