The Patriots escaped by the skin of their teeth.
The Jay County High School boys golf team edged the South Adams Starfires by one stroke Thursday at Portland Golf Club to earn a 168-169 victory.
Caleb DeRome was the match medalist, shooting a 37. He shot par on seven of the nine holes, only posting bogeys on holes No. 2 and 8.
The Starfires’ leading golfer was Tristan Daily, who shot a 40.
Gage Sims had the second-lowest score for the Patriots. He shot a 41 thanks to birdies on the first and sixth holes.
After not scoring for the past two matches, Liam Garringer bounced back with the third-best Patriot score at 44. He had a birdie on the par-4 seventh hole.
Isaac Homan rounded out Jay County’s score with a birdie on hole No. 5 and par on hole No. 6 to earn a 46 on the day.
Cody DeHoff’s score of 48 did not count toward the team’s score.
Jay County’s JV team lost to South Adams 195-207.
Falcons fly by
Jay County’s girls tennis team battled the Winchester Golden Falcons on Thursday but lost 4-1 as three out of five positions required a third set.
Brenna Haines provided the only win of the day for the Patriots. She won the No. 1 singles match 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Brenna Bailey, Kaylee Zimmerman and Melana Zimmerman were also forced into third sets. Bailey fell 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles contest while the Zimmerman twins lost 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in the No. 1 doubles match.
In the No. 3 singles, Maggie Dillon didn’t go to a third set but forced a tiebreaker. She suffered a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 defeat.
Meredith Dirksen and Sophie Sprunger lost just their second No. 2 doubles match of the season. They fell 6-3, 6-2 Thursday, their first defeat since April 6.
JV won five out of seven matches.
Hits galore
The Jay County baseball team couldn’t keep up with Heritage on Thursday as it was out-hit 12-10 in a 13-7 loss.
Jay County was able to take an early 3-2 lead on a ground ball from Josh Dowlen, a single by Dusty Pearson and an intentional walk to Sam Myers.
The lead did not last long, as Heritage (13-5, 6-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) came back with a three-run inning of its own. Dalton White hit a two-run home run in the inning.
Heritage tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning, before a pair of three-run innings in the sixth and seventh.
Jackson Edwards suffered the loss, surrendering nine runs on eight hits in five innings.
Edwards, Pearson and Christian Runkle each had two hits for Jay County (10-12, 1-4 ACAC). Runkle also added two runs.
Barnett’s bashes
Barnett’s beat Cook’s Nursery 14-11 in Portland Junior League Rookie baseball Thursday.
Lyric McCord led the way for Barnett’s with three doubles and two RBIs. Drew Lingo drove in the most runs with four for Barnett’s.
Both Emerson Cavanaugh and Cohen Saint went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Rounding out Barnett’s’ offense was Bently Berry who went 2-for-3 with a double.
The offensive leader for Cook’s was Steven Robins, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
Kayden Alberson and Trey Hirschy both were perfect from the plate and added an RBI apiece. Alberson hit a triple while Hirschy added a double.
Going 2-for-3 were both Hunter Hamilton and Kaden Hoffman. Both hit triples while Hamilton pushed two runs across the plate.
Smashing stars
The Portland All Stars 8-and-younger softball team dominated Winchester on Thursday with a 17-2 victory.
Carsyn Guggenbiller, Savannah Hudson and Kierstyn White were all 5-for-5 from the plate. Hudson and White both hit a double and scored two runs, while Guggenbiller scored four runs.
Behind the trio were Emme Theurer and Jolee LeMaster, going 4-for-5. LeMaster also crossed home plate four times.
Rounding out the offense were Hazel Skirvin and Kynlee Homan, who added three hits and two runs apiece.
37 medals
Judan Judo won 37 medals during the 2023 Indiana State Championships for USA Judo on April 29.
They finished third out of 45 teams competing in the event.
Connor Stultz and Addie Homan led Judan Judo with two gold medals apiece. Stultz took first in the 11-12 Novice Heavy Weight competition and the 11-12 Advanced Heavy Weight event. Homan was victorious in the 5-6 Novice Light Weight and the 5-6 Advanced Light Weight events.
Other first-place finishers include Corbin Lothridge, Kinley Tarter, Carlie Dawson and Julian Camp.
They had 20 second-place finishes and nine third-place finishes.
