Jay softball wins two

HAGERSTOWN — The Patriots only have two more games before their sectional opener.

They picked up a pair of wins heading into the final week of the regular season.

The Jay County High School softball team swept the Hagerstown Tigers 11-0 and 9-8 Saturday.

In the first game, the Patriots (18-5) hit a trio of home runs from Renna Schwieterman, Jozey Shimp and Riah Champ to fuel the victory.

Taylor Brown earned the win, only giving up four hits through six innings.

A five-run sixth inning saved the Patriots in game two.

Down 5-4 heading into the sixth, Jay County took advantage of four errors from the Tigers to score five runs. It also had three singles in the inning, including a two-RBI single from Jaelynn Lykins.

Shimp picked up the win in game two, giving up five runs on eight hits before Taylor Brown came in to close the final two innings.



Patriots fall

LAPEL — Jay County’s girls tennis team was outmatched against Greenfield-Central on Saturday. It lost 4-1 against the Cougars at the Lapel Invitational.

Brenna Haines provided the only win for the Patriots when she took down Brianna McConnell 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match.

Meredith Dirksen and Sophie Sprunger fell to Lauren Chastain and Hallie Smith in the No. 2 doubles contest 6-4, 6-2.

Maggie Dillon was swept in the first set (6-0) before Maddison Succaw won the second set and the No. 3 singles match 6-2.

The No. 2 singles contest was won by Kammi Anderson when she defeated Brenna Bailey 6-2, 6-3.

Kaylee and Melana Zimmerman suffered a loss in the No.1 doubles match 6-3, 6-2.



Underclass track

HUNTINGTON — A pair of career bests led the Jay County boys track freshmen and sophomores at the Huntington North Invitational on Saturday. The Patriots scored 30.5 points to earn them 10th place at the meet, while Mount Vernon took first place with 136.

Freshman Joseph Boggs finished fifth in the 1,600-meter run while running a career best four minutes, 43.26 seconds. Dylan Marentez joined Boggs with a career-best 55 seconds in the 400 dash to earn himself sixth at the meet.

Other individuals who scored were Gabe Pinkerton, who finished eighth in the 100 dash, and Adam Alig in fourth place in the high jump.



Barnett’s batters

Barnett’s beat Matt's Garage 10-3 Friday in Portland Junior League Rookie baseball.

Four of Barnett’s’ batters went 3-for-3 in the game, those being Bently Berry, Emerson Cavanaugh, Micah McCord and Cohen Saint. Berry also added a double and two RBIs while McCord pushed two runs across home plate as well. Berry, Cavanaugh and McCord all had two RBIs in the game, while Berry and Cavanaugh also smacked doubles.

Matt’s Garage was led by Owen Clemson who went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a triple.

Adding to Matt’s Garage’s offense was Aiden May with two singles and Jaxon Allred with a double.



Sport physicals

Jay County JR-SR High School will partner with IU Health Jay to provide sports physicals at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Student athletes who arrive at the main gym before 7:30 p.m. with $20 and all required forms are eligible for a physical.

Prior to arriving, parents will need to create an account on Final Forms and complete the online forms. Athletes will also need to sign forms on Final Forms as well before printing off the IHSAA pre-physical form.

Athletes will need to bring the completed physical form, consent to treatment and responsibility forms as well as the $20 fee.
