The Patriots have slipped as they head into the sectional tournament.

The Jay County girls tennis team, which will open sectional play at 5 p.m. tonight at home against Winchester, fell to the Alexandria Tigers 4-1 Monday.

The Patriots (6-7) have lost three in a row, including 4-1 Thursday to Winchester. Randolph Southern and Union City will meet in tonight’s other semifinal. The winners move on to play in the sectional championship match at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Brenna Haines had the only Patriot win in the No. 1 singles match, 6-3, 6-4.

Kaylee and Melana Zimmerman played a close match, but lost 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 1 doubles contest.

Meredith Dirksen and Sophie Sprunger continue to slide as they lost the No. 2 doubles match 6-3, 6-1.

The Tigers also took the No. 3 singles contest when Maggie Dillon fell 6-3, 7-5.

Brenna Bailey was swept in the No. 2 singles match, 6-0, 6-0.

The JV struggled as well, winning only two of four matches against the Tigers.

Daisy Muhlenkamp earned a win in the No. 2 singles contest 8-4.

The No. 1 doubles match was won by Chloe Ruiz and Zion Beiswanger 8-3.



Golden effort

Jay County’s junior high golf team took down Daleville 119-154 in a six-hole match at Portland Golf Club on Monday.

Dawson Goldsworthy was the match medalist, shooting a 25 thanks to netting pars on the first, fourth, eighth and ninth holes.

Behind Goldsworthy was Jayden Comer with a 30. He bogeyed on the third and eight holes.

Jacob Weitzel and Jenson Avery tied with a 32 to finalize the Patriots’ score. Both boys bogeyed on hole No. 8 while Weitzel also bogeyed on No. 9.

Kason Sims’ 40 and Toby Swartzentruber’s 41 did not factor into the team score.



Wings win

Wings and Rings edged out Optimist in Portland Junior League Rookie softball 10-8 on Monday.

Kendall Evans, Carsyn Guggenbiller and Emme Theurer all went 3-for-3 for Wings and Rings. Theurer hit a triple and scored three times. Guggenbiller also had three runs while Evans provided one.

Maria Heitkamp led Optimist’s offense, going 4-for-4 with a double and a run. Ivy Trinidad was also perfect from the plate (3-for-3) with a run scored.

Lizzie Miller also provided a double and a run for Optimist while Ana Blizzard crossed home plate twice.
