FORT RECOVERY — The Indians are moving on.
Six Thunderbird errors helped push the Fort Recovery High School baseball team past the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds 8-2 in Tuesday’s Division IV sectional opener.
FRHS advances to the sectional championship at 5 p.m. Thursday at New Bremen against the Cardinals.
The Indians got the ball rolling with a three-run third inning.
The first three batters reached base on a walk, catcher's interference and an error. Troy Homan then drew a walk to score the first run of the game. Two more would score on a sacrifice fly and an error by catcher Matthew Quatman.
The Tribe rattled off five more runs in the sixth inning, thanks to three singles, a double, a walk, another sacrifice fly and another Quatman error.
Alex Dues was on the mound for the Indians and went the distance. He earned the win as he struck out eight batters while giving up nine hits.
The Indians previously beat New Bremen 3-0 April 4.
OHSAA ruling
COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the second year in a row, OHSAA member schools decided against allowing students to play for other schools’ teams if the school in which they are involved doesn’t have a team.
The proposed rule change failed by a 427-374 vote. It had also been on the referendum last year, when it failed by just 13 votes.
The rule would have allowed students to participate on the team of a neighboring school district if their school does not offer a particular sport. The board of education for the team’s school and the superintendent from the athlete’s school would need to agree to allow the participation.
Twelve other rule changes were passed, including items clarifying language to rules about transferring schools and unique academic situations that affect a student’s eligibility to participate in athletics.
