MUNCIE — Isaac Kunkler will be competing in the regional meet at Lawrence Central on Thursday.
Kunkler finished second and third, respectively, in the 300-meter and 110 hurdles to power the Jay County High School boys track team to fifth place at the IHSAA sectional meet Thursday at Delta.
The Patriots’ 4x800 relay team also qualified for the regional — it will be contested Thursday at Lawrence Central in Indianapolis — with a top-three sectional finish. Two other individuals were added to fill out the 16-athlete regional field.
The Patriots tallied 54 points in the meet, falling third while host Delta won the meet with 144 points.
Kunkler set a new career best in the 110 hurdles, finishing with a 15.76 second mark. He had a time of 41.51 in the 300 hurdles as well.
The 4x800 relay team composed of Brayden Collins, Dylan Marentes, Tony Wood and Joseph Boggs also earned their way to the regional meet with a second-place finish and a time of 8 minutes, 35.17 seconds.
While Boggs (sixth – 1,600 run) and Wood (fifth – 400 dash) did not earn automatic berths, both of their times were good enough to get them one of the remaining four spots in the regional meet.
Super sixth
A five-run sixth inning helped push the Jay County softball team past the Northeastern Knights 10-8 on Thursday.
A pair of two-run home runs from Jaelyn Lykins and Taylor Brown fueled the key inning. Joey Shimp drove in the other run in between the two blasts.
The Patriots had a rough first inning, giving up four runs, including a two-run home run by Emma Neeley.
Jay County battled back with a run in the second and four in the third. Another two-run home run, this time from Shimp, started the scoring in the third inning before a pair of singles plated two more.
Another four-run inning for the Knights put them back on top before the Patriots came back. Three of the four runs came on a pair of doubles.
Mallory Winner earned the win, not giving up a single run on only two hits in the final three innings.
Mashing Myers
DECATUR — Sam Myers’ four-RBI game fueled the Jay County baseball team’s 15-4 victory over the Bellmont Braves on Thursday in five innings.
It was the Patriots’ final regular season game before they travel to Yorktown to take on New Castle in the sectional semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
The Patriots wasted no time jumping on the Braves with a six-run first inning and a five-run second. They had a total of eight hits in the two frames.
Jay County put the game out of reach in the fourth, when Myers blasted a grand slam to center field.
Jackson Edwards earned the win despite surrendering a run in each of his four innings pitched. He also struck out eight batters.
Eli Laurent had the hottest bat for the Braves, hitting a double and a triple while helping create two runs in the game.
DeHoff bounces back
CELINA, Ohio — Cody DeHoff bounced back as the Jay County boys golf team finished third with a score of 184 against South Adams (176) and Adams Central (179).
After scoring in only two of the last six matches, DeHoff had the second lowest score for the Patriots with a 46 thanks to back-to-back pars on the sixth and seventh hole.
The only better score came from Caleb DeRome who shot a 42. He did it with pars on six different holes.
The score was tied for best in the meet with Syilas Loshe of South Adams and Keaton Bush.
Luke Fugiett shot a 47 with pars on holes No. 2 and 9.
Gage Sims’ score of 49 rounded out the Patriots’ team score. Sims parred on the sixth hole.
Liam Garringer’s 54 did not count to the team score.
Final victory
The Jay County Junior High golf team won its final match of the season Thursday as they took down Selma 123-147 at Portland Golf Club.
Dawson Goldsworthy was the match medalist, shooting a team-low 28 in the six-hole match.
Goldsworthy’s only par came on hole No. 1 while he bogeyed the third, fourth and eighth holes.
Behind Goldsworthy was Jayden Comer shooting a 30. He had a similar stat line with a par on the first hole and bogeys on three, four and eight.
Jensen Avery shot a 32 with a pair of bogeys on holes No. 8 and 9.
The final qualifying score came from Jacob Weitzel at 33. He added bogeys on the third and fourth hole.
Tobe Swartzentruber and Kason Sims both shot a 40, not counting toward the team’s score.
Patriots by 30
The Jay County eighth grade baseball team won a pair of games by a total of 30 runs against Eastbrook on Thursday. They clobbered Eastbrook 18-1 in the first game and 14-1 in the second.
In game No. 1, the Patriots scored 15 in the first inning. Runs scored on four walks, two singles, three doubles, one triple and a groundout.
The game was only three innings long, in which Boston Barnett pitched, giving up no hits while striking seven out.
The Patriots scored five, four and five runs respectively in the three innings of game two. They stole nine bases in the contest, Skyler Esparza with three of them.
Benson Barnett pitched most of the game, giving up one run on two hits while striking six out.
Offense powers
MARION — The Jay County seventh grade baseball team took out McCulloch 22-8 on Thursday.
The game was tied 8-8 going into the sixth inning. A triple from Gavin Byrum scored two runs as the Patriots went on to score 16 in the inning.
Nick Snow earned the win despite giving up six runs over three innings.
Five Patriots collected multiple hits in the game. They were Byrum, Snow, Alex Miller, Kent Siegrist and Cohen Shimp.
Perfect three
The Portland All Stars 8-and-younger softball team’s offense was too much for Yorktown on Thursday, winning 10-3.
Three All Stars hit a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate. Carsyn Guggenbiller and Savannah Hudson both scored three runs with Guggenbiller also adding two doubles. Along with them, Kierstyn White hit a double and scored twice.
Supporting the three were Kynlee Homan and Jolee LeMaster who both were 3-for-4. LeMaster scored twice in the ball game.
The All Stars jumped out early with a four-run first inning against Yorktown. The other six runs came in the fourth and fifth innings when they scored three apiece.
Reality hurts
Loy Real Estate and Auction beat Local 1620 of Portland Junior League Sandy Koufax baseball on Thursday 11-6.
Grant Fennig and Sam Wiggins both had two RBIs for Loy. Fennig added two hits and a run while Wiggins had one hit and two runs.
Loy also got production from Peyton Yowell in the form of a triple and a run scored as well as Noah Enyart who contributed a single, run and RBI.
Rhysin Blowers led the offensive charge for Local 1620 with a walk, single and a triple and scored all three times.
Dominic Bright and Wes Winning also scored for Local 1620. Bright had a triple while Winning hit a single.
Tie in Mays
Optimist and Kiwanis finished their Portland Junior League Willie Mays baseball game in a tie on Thursday night 6-6.
Kiwanis’ Kendel Glessner led the way with two triples and a single in three at bats.
Cash Reynolds was also perfect from the plate, slashing four hits, including a double.
Optimist got extra base hits from two players as well, those being Kellan Tout and Benson Armstrong. Tout hit a double and two singles while Armstrong added a double and a single.
Easton Steed also had multiple hits, slashing two singles.
High tied
Barnett’s and Pak-A-Sak finished their Portland Junior League Rookie baseball game in a tie on Thursday night 10-10.
Landon Wright of Pak-A-Sak was the game’s offensive leader with five RBIs on a home run and a single.
Corbin Brown, Ricky Heitkamp, Cage Reynolds and Carson Pryor all went 3-for-3 for Pak-A-Sak while Kasen Rowles’ two hits brought home two runs.
Emerson Cavanaugh was Barnett’s’ RBI leader with four coming from a double and a single.
Bentley Berry and Drew Lingo shared the same stat line for Barnett’s, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a double.
Rounding out the offense was Lyric McCord with three hits and an RBI.
Cooks wins
Cooks Nursery beat Matt’s Garage of Portland Junior League Rookie baseball on Thursday 15-4.
Kayden Alberson led Cooks Nursery with a triple, two doubles, a single, three runs and four RBIs.
Supporting Alberson was Trey Hirschy with two triples and three runs, Reid Wendel with two doubles and three runs and Parker Eley who went 3-for-3.
Owen Clemons led Matt’s Garage with two RBIs and a home run.
Rock wins
The Rock’s offense was too much for Fishers Meats of Portland Junior League Minor softball on Wednesday as they won 14-1.
Ellie Wiggins led the way with an inside-the-park home run for The Rock.
Aleah McIntire led the Rock by scoring three runs in the game.
Behind McIntire was a trio of girls with two, those being Emmy Clark, Gabi Miller and Adalee Rigby.
Also scoring runs for The Rock were Lucy Arnold, Chessa Butler and Maggie Westgerdes.
Winning Wings
Wings and Rings of the Portland Junior League Rookie softball dominated Optimist 22-3 on Wednesday.
Carsyn Guggenbiller and Emme Theurer both hit grand slams in the game. Carsyn Guggenbiller also scored three runs while going 4-for-4.
Six other players were perfect from the plate going 3-for-3 for Wings and Rings.
Brooklyn Evans, Hayden Guggenbiller and Maddie Theurer all scored three runs.
Kendall Evans and Kierstyn White both crossed home plate twice while Lucy Locke scored once.
