Jay County High School’s boys golf team celebrated Senior Night with a 171-182 victory over Wes-Del at Portland Golf Club.
The win followed a loss Thursday to the Adams Central Jets at Wabash Valley Golf Course in which both teams shot 167 but the hosts won via the fifth-player tiebreaker.
Junior Caleb DeRome shot a 3-over-par 38 to lead the Patriots to the victory. He trailed Wes-Del’s Brian Russell by one stroke for match medalist honors.
Gage Sims followed DeRome with a 42. Cody DeHoff came in at 45, and Liam Garringer rounded out the team score with a 46.
The Patriots lone senior, Austin Dirksen, was moved into the starting lineup for the evening and finished with a 59.
In Thursday’s match, Adams Centra’s Eddie Everett earned his team the win as his No. 5 score of 49 bested the Patriots’ Luke Fugiett by five.
DeRome was the match medalist with a 38, narrowly edging out Keeton Bush (39). After three bogeys, DeRome strung four pars together before finishing with a birdie and a final par.
The Patriots’ second best score came from Sims, who shot a 40. DeHoff came in with a 44, and Garringer finished at 45.
Optimist win
Optimist took down REMC of Portland Junior League Rookie softball on Wednesday 9-4.
Kynlee Homan, Lizzie Miller, Maria Heitkamp and Ellie Darby were all perfect from the plate for Optimist with three hits. Homan and Miller both scored all three times while Heitkamp scored twice.
REMC’s leading hitters were Emily Geesaman and Josie Snow with two hits apiece. Both girls, along with Jo Jo Schwieterman scored a run.
Crossroads win
Crossroads beat The Rock of Portland Junior League Rookie softball on Wednesday 10-5.
Both Danica Chowning and Maddi Reitenour hit a home run and a single in the contest.
Chloe Yates, Lilah Hudson and Emma Wilhelm slapped doubles. Yates drove in two runs while Hudson plated one.
Alyssa Wendel and Paisley Day both drove in runs on a single as well.
Tie game
POET Bioprocessing and Barnett’s finished in a 12-12 tie on Thursday in Portland Junior League Rookie baseball.
Ten doubles were hit in the game, five from each team. Harvey Hemmelgarn, Eli Micheal and Owen Micheal all provided one for POET, while Corbin Hutzler added two.
Barnett’s got doubles from Emmerson Cavanaugh, Micah McCord and Bryson Berry. Drew Lingo hit two doubles and a home run for Barnett’s as well.
